Kings equal Deadwood Lite. Whoever is responsible for funding or selecting shows with similarities to award winning productions needs retraining on how to capture an audience.
I think the show is very entertaining. I think it can caputre many different audiences and i think that only those that come with a negative attitude and/or their minds made up will be the ones that truly hate the show. I hope that it stays long enough to truly develop the story line and for people to be able to relate to the characters even more.
Wow! I am happy to finally see a show that I can truly enjoy. I am spreading the word about Kings. Excellant!! Please give us more, more, more.
While watching Kings, I noticed many similarities between biblical texts and the show. Though there were scenes and characters in the show that were directly related to those in biblical texts, there were also times when it seemed as though the show used other points in biblical texts and inserted it in Kings. There were two main times when I noticed this. First, I noticed a time when a line from Megillah Esther was used in the show. Also, I noticed that Saul had a wife and a seperate lover, and I believe this could relate to an earlier point in Samuel when Elkanah is said to have two wives. In Kings, Saul has a completely separate life with his lover, which is similar to Elkanah and his two wives. I think it is really interesting how ideas were taken from different points in the text and translated onto the screen. Great job with the show so far!
This is the greatest show I have seen yet... I want this show to be two hours long every week. The characters are great and the actors who play them fit well into their character so far. We need to see life would be if we had a king. And in some senses as a miilatry wife I feel the pains of a never ending war. Great job! Loved the first episode and cant wait for this Sunday. Thank you for giving me something to watch and enjoy with my Marine.
In virtually all updates of classicl stories - and even in period pieces that adapt such stories - producers inevitably include characters to round out the storytelling, like Perry the historian and Cross the Halliburtion creep. I think specifically of Nefretiri the semi-historical character in The Ten Commandments and Thomas Malory, the writer who shows up anachronistically as a little boy in Camelot. Every legend gets these barnacles added to it by each of the hands through which it passes. Lancelot, for a similar example, was added to the Arthurian legend sometime in the 12th century to give the relationship with the queen a little dramatic tension. The really cool elements about your approach to the David story, though, are the ways you find to keep disparate elements from the original tale intact. Samuels, still a real mystic with a real relationship with God, offhandedly smears a bit of oil on David's forehead when they meet, as if anointing him. Michelle falls in love with David after hearing his music (can Mr Egan sing?). It was interesting, though, that you made Jesse his mom. I might have suggested keeping Jesse as the father, still running the farm, and make mom the one who had died in the war. They could both have been away in the military while the boys ran the farm and dad could have been the one left embittered by national politics. This would have maintained the dense masculine subculture of David's upbringing and allowed him to be perceived by dad and brothers as the young sensitive one who was never meant to leave the homestead. Just a thought.
30 minutes into the first show I saw that it was Biblical King Saul and David. This show is going to be quickly cancelled, but it would be wonderful to see it continue for a few seasons. I missed most of the second episode.
Clever idea to modernize the King Saul/David story. I am waiting to see how this plays out. So far, I'm enjoying it.
Thanks NBC for bringing something fresh to the dismal wasteland of Tv Drama. KINGS is the best written show, and best produced show on TV. I loved the Shakesperean mix of a bit of comedy mixed with the drama in episode two. The pigeon episodes were a nice break in tension. Great cenematography also. You can see the class in these production values. Thanks so much...and the very best of luck with this great show. I'm spreading the word!
I like it. I would say NBC is dominating right now.
First I wan't to say, I love this show!I was instantly hooked and it was the bibical refrences in it that yanked the line that hooked me.I disagree with Loxias's comment on how the show will be cancelled, it's about time someone has brought some Light into the darkend Television world. Keep up the good work and I am looking foward to the second season already.
NBC should BE dominating right now. This show is simply AMAZING and this is from someone who knows the religious story.....but isn't that religious.
NBC, look at the hulu.com reviews at ratings, NOT the Nielsen people. They simply don't have anything else to do than watch self-centric people like themselves who have nothing else better to do than keep a journal about it as they watch American Idiot and Disparate B**ches (not all the viewers, but a majority). I'm just saying that I believe the majority of people are NOT represented by Nielsen....at least my demographic (male, 23, college, white).
Please give it a better slot & THANKS FOR THE SHOW.
>>WE NEED MORE TELEVISION THAT QUESTIONS OUR ETHICAL AND MORAL JUDGMENT (of what we'd do). ESPECIALLY AFTER THE RECENT FINANCIAL CRISIS.
Great show....from the acting to the directing to the writing. Hope it stays, but there is no telling these days, some people just don't get it and can't recognize good tv anymore.
I loved the show. NBC, please keep it on!!!!!
I really enjoy seeing Wes Studi play in Kings. It would be interesting to see an "alternative future tribe" like you see in Wes Studi, always the serious tribal warrior.
Kings has a great storyline and I really enjoy this alternative future drama with major bits of action. Very well done and very well supported by the Indian Community for having Wes Studi on the set and his major supporting role in this TV show.
Yes i would have to agree. I mainly watch www.Hulu.com com and I would have to say the hulu.com forums are pretty on tact for checking out the films for the everyday person.
Keep up the good works on Kings. Great drama, thought engaging (if not provoking), and good spots of action. Although the action may die off, i hope it does not dive into non-action dribble like Terminator or Battle Star Galactica. (Seemingly ACTION PACKED TITLES) but now not as much action. (which is pathetic for such land mark titles).
Nice that Kings is a clean slate (minus the major biblical plot substructure).
Thanks for a great show! It is very entertaining and I can't wait for the next episode. I believe it is very well written and plays on the emotions of the viewers.
Whoever is doing PR for this show should be fired immediately. This show is the biggest thing out, everyone I know is talking about this show and glued to it. Nielsen ratings are all I read about this show- how can NBC let that happen?
I know this show has to be DOMINATING when you factor in Hulu. Reminds me of earlier in the year when record analysts said Kanye West's album was "disappointing" in terms of sales... while cd's didn't fly the first week, it dominated itunes and zune for months to come. It's 2009 people, time to hire some PR people to show your success . . . I'm telling you right now if NBC does give in to the Nielsen nonsense then there is going to be an angry mob outside NBC studios the next day. Now, PLEASE, can someone do their job and get on the horn and ensure the next time I google "kings" I am reading an article about this shows success and not cancellation rumors?
I watched the first 2 episodes last night online. It surpassed my expectations. I'm very excited about this new show.
it da shit
This is an awesome show. If the ratings does not please NBC, I strongly recommend that this show could move on to one of its sister cable networks, like the syfy channel. The writing and the casting is excellent. I hope NBC would let this show continue to live if the ratings are not high enough. Please give this show a chance.
I swear to God if David becomes Gay this will be the gayest show ever, but the show is awesome....for now
I thought Deadwood was lame and uninspiring, and I thought Heroes was needlessly complex and ultimately disappointing after the first season. I think both the writing and the acting in this series, on the other hand, is tremendous. I don't watch much TV any more, actually - got rid of my cable TV a couple of months ago because I'm exhausted by the banality and the predictability of television in general (been watching Kings on the internet). I particularly enjoy the writing for Silas - it's been amazing thus far. So to everyone involved - congratulations! You've created something really special here, and you've drawn in at least one fan for whom it takes quite a lot of originality and subtelty to impress (and this show has both in spades). Well done!
Love the show. I really find it interesting that the king tells the historian what to write. Hmmm, wonder if that really happens with our presidents?
Love the way the show correlates the David/Saul story. You need to move it to a new night, though. We want it to survive. Let it last like you have Chuck and Friday Night Lights. Both are great shows. Give it a chance.
Also, who says nobody watches TV on Saturday? In today's economy, more and more people are staying home. Station Execs have stayed away from Saturday night for decades because they believe nobody watches tv. Not so. There is NOTHING on Saturdays to watch, so why not give everyone a reason to watch? People go our Friday nights. Give Saturday a chance with Kings or change it to another night where it will survive!!! Make it survive! Thanks
I really like this show. My wife doesn't because she is a PBS type. I tape it and watch it privately, The pastors in my church are excited about it. It took me about 40 minutes to realize what the story is based on. A great mix of Sci Fi biblical histor, and alternate reality.
Regards: Davidrex
I really like the alternate reality style of this show. Sometime in the 21st century plus (after some desolating event) we have the Kingdom of Gilboa, the City of Shiloh and King Silas. David Shepherd destroys a Goliath Tank and brings about peace with Gath (maybe).
Very clever retelling of a very old story. It took about 40 minutes to realize what the producers, writers, and actors in this show had done. I gave a DVD to a friend in a men's bible class and he still hasn't caught on.
I told our associate pastor about it and he was very interested. Here is a show that he could get the youth into. The only flaw in the character development is making Jack/(Jonathan) a bad guy.
In a way it reminds me of another cult TV series Jericho (on another network; sorry:). I think this may be one of the most original TV series for a long time.
Regards: Davidrex
Going through ancient archives, that were written on shiny circular disks, i found the following account:
The second American Civil War was even more destructive in terms of percentage of population and cities destroyed than the first. Both the Federated States Government, centered in Cheyenne, Wyoming and the United States Government, centered in New York City battled for supremacy. Both sides acquired access to stored nuclear, chemical, and biological agents. ”. Not even Europe and Asia were spared, as survivors who escaped the North American Continent carried disease-resistant pathogens. Great plagues and famine decimated their populations The outcome was referred to by those who survived as “The Great Desolation
Because of their tribal-nation status and relative isolation, the Native-American tribes joined with groups of survivors and were able to recover some isolated degrees of social order. As in centuries before, tribal rivalries came into play again and led to wars between them. Many thought themselves to be remnants of the tribes of Israel who they believed migrated to the continent several millennia ago. Over many generations, they took on the tribal names of the patriarchs. Of these, the tribe of Benjamin became dominant.
This tribe began a series of conflicts known as the “Unification Wars”. Eventually an uneasy truce took place. As he stood with his troops in the abyss that was once New York City, The Spirit of God moved upon a soldier, Silas of Benjamin in the form of a crown of butterflies. With the direction of the Holy Spirit he mustered the troops, was declared King, and began to rebuild.
Now you know the rest of the story.
dig the plot. Modern day monarchy, romance element, power struggle. It is thick to say the least. Bible corolations or not I like the direction of this show so far. Keep up the good work Green.
In today's barrage of political, medical and police drama episodes on television, it is good to see a storyline that uses an old world plot and let's it meet with 21st century thinking. Bravo to the producers, directors, writers and cast for taking a chance on a show that is intriguing, intelligent and entertaining in an otherwise Pollyanna world.
Absolutely excellent show. Characters are fascinating. I'm hooked!
Finally, a reason to watch NBC again!
Congratulations NBC on the show. DO NOT LET IT GO. Nielson has too much power in the industry. This show is as good or better than many on the premium cable channels. After seeing the review in the NY Times I didn't rush to watch. But 2 weeks later I was looking for something to watch online and decided to check out the show because of what it was trying to do and because I figured McShane wouldn't do anything that was wasn't interesting.
Episode 1 was somewhat clunky as first acts or episodes are because it had to lay out so much exposition. Also the correct balance hadn't yet been reached for the ratio of contemporary language to King James/Shakesperian style(a flaw that has faded in subsequent episodes). But I kept watching because some stories are ageless and among other things I enjoyed Shakesperian touches such as the two comic palace guards who introduce humor.
I was also, and continue to be, particularly intrigued by how the diversity in casting adds additional layers to the story. Episode 2 really grabbed me and by 3 I was eager to see the next one. Just watched 4 online and it was fabulous. The script is wonderful at introducing the archtypical themes and weaving them together to reveal their relevence to our time. I wanted the story to go on. I could have sat here completely ignoring work for the whole day.
With the advent of online watching there should be away for network and cable stations to make the advertisers recognize that they might be better off spending more money on supporting online viewing for two reasons. First, I hardly watch tv shows via tv. I have to be up early in the morning and its great to see the show when its convenient for me without having to pay for a Tivo or my cable provider's dvr. Second, I always either mute or walk away from TV commercials which I tend not to do when watching online because their is only one--and oddly I simply don't mind them as much. They are usually more interesting and inventive and allow you click for further information if are interested. Because I am watching at my desk I will note down a product of interest and return to the commercial after the program to click on the further info buttons.
I wouldn't like to see the number or length of commercials per episode go up (I am of a generation that tends to have a grownup attention span. But on the whole I don't mind them and don't have to get angry because they address me as if I were an idiot.
Congratulations again on a wonderful show.
I am absolutely LOVING this program - Kudos to NBC and the writers for a job well done!
I have enjoyed the show very much. I was not too sure at first, but I am enjoying the twists on not only an old biblical story, but on the history of humanity. Thank you for a show that does force people to think, and not just be. I look forward to many more episodes. Thank you.
I absolutely love the show. The writing is fresh and promotes thought (as well as reflection). I sincerely hope that NBC does not bow to ratings and cancel such a good show. In recent years, pseudo-reality shows have dominated TV; yes, the exact same idle nothingness that Bradbury comments on in his book Fahrenheit 451. If this show can make us think and reflect, then I say Kudos NBC. Be Brave, Be a Leader, and Endure. The stale cop dramas, CSI-types have already been written; good work on going back to the original source of fables and parables. Please give this show the chance it deserves.
Finally a show not about hospitals and cops. Love it!!!
I haven't bothered to watch NBC much in the last decade, in fact the last time I was hooked on a NBC show was when Scrubs was still aired on NBC and before that was Sisters. So when I accidentally found this show I was amazed and thrilled. Ian McShane is Brilliant and in fact he is the reason I stopped channel surfing that night and gave Kings a chance. Now I am hooked. I can't get enough and find myself eagerly awaiting all new episodes and evenb looking for episode recaps on line just to get my Kings fix.
By the way shame on your advertising--I should have never had to find this show by accidental channel surfing!!!!
I also find myself watching NBC before and after this show airs. If this show leaves NBC I guess I will be too, again. ;-(
It took a while to figure out, But after seeing all the episodes twice its sinking in who these charactors represent in a modern way. I love that Kings doesn't hit you upfront necessarily of the bibical connection, yet that undercurrent grows on you as you watch.
This is a high quality, intelligent, serious, and very entertaining series in KINGS. I really hope you give it all you can let it catch on.
Hi dean: I gave a DVD i made of it in a guy in a bible class at my church. He is watching it in stages. At last report he hadn't gotten it. It took me about 40 minutes before i realized the basis of the plot.
I have never commented on an online forum for a TV show. I am very intrigued with Kings... it has components of biblical reference, fantasy, history, philosophy on current events, intrigue and more. Characters and production style are excellent. It is like viewing a novel, complete with its own language. A world next to ours. Good show- I hope it stays for a while. Thank you.
It's hard for me to get into tv shows due to the fact I don't have cable. I was told to watch this show on hulu by someone who only watched 2o min of an episode. They said it was amazing and I trusted thier opinion. I was not dissapointed! in fact I count my self lucky to have been told about this show. I love the setting and idea of the story. But, when I watched the speech the king makes in the first episode he said "it's not popular to speak of God" and he was right. People are afraid of the very subject. But, if they like a good story and wonderfully produced enertainment then they need to grow up and take a second look at one of the best shows on TV, Kings.
Bravo NBC. Finally, a show with real substance. Thank you for giving your viewers the benefit of intelligence. Please do not coward to the ratings. Stand behind your talented actors, directors, writers and producers. This show will catch on.
Really great show but I warn you all when I really like a show they cancel it almost without fail. I hope I am not the kiss of death for this original well written and well acted show. Those points alone might be the kiss of death:)
I would definitely consider myself to be a connoisseur of prime time television shows. This I say with passion, "I have NEVER been this excited about a show on television!!!" I absolutely LOVE this show. I pray that it stays on for years and I look forward to its winning several Emmy awards! LONG LIVE THE KINGS!!!
We are what, half way through the series now and I’m a little confused. Kings offers such an interesting opportunity to look at power, it’s corrupting influences, it’s ability to ruin common men and to enslave those who use it, but so far it’s inched away from the ruthlessness that would validate the show. So many of the characters keep hinting at the dark corners of their souls, but what we see is often less compelling than the power struggles seen in many community theater organizations.
And yet…..
I keep hoping that one of the characters makes a real play. The prince has all the motives, but his actions are timid and ultimately thwarted by David, a hapless country bumpkin who falls into the limelight. In real life, he would be dead. Silas would never have made it this far—he never displays true cold blooded ruthless use of power—only hints at it. Ian McShane., wasted. (Although the scenes with he and Brain Cox are really delightful.)
I know the season has wrapped. If there were to be a season 2—and I don’t even know if its structured for another season—It would be interesting to see these characters really get out the knives. Unfortunately now its just sort of Masterpeice Theatre Lite. Fun, but not very deep.
What happened? I went to watch tonight and it was off??? was it canceled????
I found the show entertaining and beautifully videographed. Over the top drama? Yes but so what? TV is escapist and I like the Biblical references and it's a good old fashioned soap opera.
So what happened? Moving around to different nights? Off the air til June?
Sounds like th death knell.
I love the show and cannot wait until it returns. I was hooked the first night.
PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL. Kings is the best show to turn up on network television in years! Kudos to the producers that found the resources to make this happen.
I only watch 2 TV shows: Friday Night Lights and Kings. Please do not cancel this show. I only get FNL for half a year and now the only other show I watch might be cancelled. Also, don't move it around - if viewers can't find the show, they can't watch it.
PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL.
I finally got around to watching the show i thought i taped last Saturday. NBC substituted a Law and Order show.
What is annoying is that the TV listings in the local paper showed Kings is supposed to be on. Also no announcement or explanation as to why the show is not on or when it will be on. I haven't checked the HULU or NBC site to see if the show is available there.
DON'T CANCEL THE SHOW AND PLEASE PROVIDE SOME PUBLICITY AND INFORMATION ABOUT THE SHOW.
The plot line of this series is very interesting to me, because The thought of a modern day monarchy for most Americans from a cultural aspect is quite a different dynamic. I really like the show and have it set on my DVR as a season pass. I see that the show will coming back in June according to the site and I hope this holds true as I really enjoy the show.
This is a good show that would catch on if they had enough sense to promote it. The name "Kings" was a poor choice since most will see the name and expect something very dull but the show itself is anything but dull. As almost always happens - I find a show that I actually think is worth watching (very rare) and it is immediately taken off the air.
I love this show. It is exceptional storytelling and myth. Thank you so much for your hard work. Bring it ON!
We LOVE this show! It has everything one could ever want - love, intrigue, corruption and spooky things coming out of nowhere - it's awesome. The Sabbath Queen was the best episode yet!
This show is proably the best series to come out in the last 10 years.
Great acting and writing with a wonderful cast. Ian Mcshane is brilliant
what is the chance of NBC changing their minds about cancelling this show?
I heard that Kings was going to be cancelled? I am shocked and very dissapointed, I strongly urge NBC to reconsider this show, it is so wonderfully written the actors are incredible the storyline is so captivating I can't wait to watch it every week and neither can my family and friends. I feel to many become so critical so fast and never give great shows a chance. this is one of those times where NBC needs to give it a chance. Bring it back for another season and see what happens? the show started out with a few awesome episodes and then was off the air for weeks! not a great way to start off a new show especially one as great and in depth as this. You gave to much time for people to forget about Kings, so you can't cancel it yet. I don't watch alot of TV shows anymore because I feel like I am watching the same thing over and over again but this show is a breath of fresh air and the use of the Iambic Pentameter is genuis. I hope the people at NBC reads these comments and that they listen. Give Kings a chance, please!
NBC - DON'T LET THIS SHOW END!!! It is the only show I record on my dvr to make sure I don't miss it.
I was devastated when it was pulled in the spring and was anxiously awaiting it's return in June.
I am watching faithfully again and I am addicted to the characters and cannot wait to find out when and how David will become KING.
Finally a show that is not another mundain lawyer, cop, medical, or reality show. Finally an interesting drama that draws me to the tv every showing.
DON'T TAKE IT AWAY!!!
YOUR DEDICATED FAN IN FLORIDA
Your wife is missing out; ask her to watch just one episode. Local PBS stations are the broadcast stations I watch most, and Kings rivals anything she'll see on Masterpiece Theater. If she doesn't love it for it's own sake, she's just being stubborn.
This show has been great so far. I have made at least 10 other fans out of the show. I hope you guys keep the racy stuff to a minimum though. The episodes without that stuff have been the best so far because the story itself keeps the audience. I would feel alot better about getting more fans if I was sure the show would always be clean. That said, keep up the good work. I've loved it!
Awwww! I just read that next week is the season finale. This show is the only one I watch on any of the mainstream networks. Nothing else is worth my time! PLEASE bring it back next year!
NBC Please continue this show. I watch every week and I have gotten others to watch
the only reason this show isnt doing so well is becasue nbc doesnt have the ability do do smart things. here you have a great show ith great acting and a great story yet nbc magicaly found a way to mess it up. if this show was on any other network it would be doing great right now
This is one of the few shows I DVR the whole season. It was fantastic. Please bring it back
Please bring this show back!
Forget the biblical parallels, this show stands on its own as entertainment. The story that is packed into less than an hour keeps all of us who have experienced it coming back week after week. After watching the finale, I cannot imagine this show not returning. It became the highlight of Sunday, then Saturday, night TV for my husband and me, and it's one of the few shows that have us making comments such as "This is really great" during the airing. What a loss if it isn't picked up for another season! If it's not, I blame the promotion of it. I feel as though I stumbled on it when I should have been anticipating it from the promos. Does the fact that this last episode was labeled "Season Finale" rather than "Series Finale" offer any hope for future episodes? NBC, do the right thing!
My favorite show, but it was never promoted. I never saw a promo. I just happened to turn on the tv while one of the first episodes was on. And I never changed the channel. Can't think of any other show that has made me, the ultimate channel changer, do that.
I'm sure it's canceled. The only episode that was above average in quality, as opposed to excellent, was this last one - the series finale. Mostly because it obviously was written to tidy things up so they could end it(worried about david and michelle? don't worry, they had the quickest make up ever and are married in the eyes of god. worried about the baby? don't worry, a year away takes care of it. worried that justice won't mete out on Jack? don't worry, he will suffer eternally. Need to know that god's plan will play out? don't worry, now the ghost reverend has conveniently tied up all those loose ends related to, and clearly stated, the divine's will. wondered what mccauly caulkin was up to? don't worry, a convenient shallow answer is given. ) My only hope is that another network, maybe cable?, picks it up so I can still have the one show I watch every week. And they can get back to great writing of thoughtful, interesting plot development as opposed to quick, convenient answers put into a one hour episode as cleanup.
Please bring this show back!
Agree! Bring Kings back!
Love the show. It is a shame if we lose a show of this quality .
I can't believe you'd cancel Kings. King's is one of my favorite programs. I'm sick to death of the same old things on TV; cop shows, lawyer shows, who don it's, reality and prime time soaps. I can hardly wait from week to week for the next episode of Kings. DO NOT CANCEL Kings. Bring it back soonest!!!
PLEASE DON'T CANCEL THIS SHOW...I LOVE IT... BEST SHOW OF THE SEASON......SO SICK OF REALITY TV
I have NEVER desired to write to or comment on any networks line-up until now. The fact that NBC is cancelling what could have been one of their most brilliant and innovative shows in decades, is beyond my understanding. To say this show was poorly marketed is an understatement, and by the time I heard about it and was immediately entranced and enthralled by it, it was gone. This is a travesty and makes me sad and angry. I can only hope that KINGS can find a life maybe somewhere else??? PLEEASE!!!!
I am from Saudi Arabia , I could not pause because of the high quality of the series and was surprised later that the series will be canceled ---- here the question arises why the stop such as the kings of the excellent work and continue bad series, if the problem (valuation) I tell you I'm the farthest place this series could reach (it's great series), however, known and admired by all of the observed series.
NBC’s How can u even think about canceling a show like this? The advertisement was very poor for it! I have just recently heard about it and watched all 13 episodes in 2 days and when i heard that it was getting canceled just kinda ruined everything for me. This show is incredibly awesome. Why NBC WHY!!!!
is there a book that you were in reference to that might bring me some solidarity?
Amazing show, but it required a smidgen of thought by the viewer. Why else would it be cancelled?
