First time I've ever posted: be kind.

The pilot is riveting. The production values are high, acting sincere (especially Jack INHO), storyline rich, and conception new. I expected something entirely different, but for post apocalyptic culture, there is tremendous possibility for good writing and intelligent allegory to unfold. The butterfly signature may prove trite if it is extended too far, but it introduced beauty as the underlying motivation for the culture and the show, and it is beauty and Godliness that may make the series thrive. Battlestar Galactica's final episode echoed the post modern beginnings of "nation," that is seen in Kings, and as nation, beauty and God intersect, Kings may be "great." I hope this show continues to be on my "must see" list. As of now, it is. Please answer: where are exterior shots? Where is "castle?" Is it green screened.

I haven’t watched a series since HBO’s The Wire. After watching the premier episode of Kings, I think I again have found a reason to spend an hour a week in front of the TV. Great plot compliments even greater acting. A deep, engrossing story.

By Frederick | March 22, 2009 10:37 AM | Reply

Ian McShane does it again! After his successful stint in "Deadwood (HBO)," I'm so glad to see him again. This is one of those actors you want to follow no matter where he goes. And what a great story line! Love this show!

By Naomi Walls | March 22, 2009 2:05 PM | Reply

Interested in the motivation behind and intent for using the Samuel through Chronicles Biblical text (with some possible hints from the Revelation text) references as the plot skeleton. Has Michael Green been interviewed regarding this?

By anonymous | March 22, 2009 5:23 PM | Reply

Best thing on TV since Deadwood went dark. (Off topic = the best thing that has EVER been written for the small screen.) Ian McShane is absolutely Shakespearean. Would love to see it in a time slot where it can survive. (How about replacing ER's? Incidentall, the last network show I ever watched, and stopped watching after the last original characters moved on and the writing went south.)

Kings has the potential to restore my faith in television writing. Please, please, please keep it. I am tired of watching my Deadwood, Rome, and Soprano's DVD's.

Great show. Keep it up. We're begging you.

Great premiere. As of now it's on my 'to watch' list.

Question, please: I've not seen anything on the actor who plays "General Abner". I've seen him in several other things but can't find anything on here about him. Would be interested in learning more about him and if his character will be expanded.

Thanks!

Wow. I was really intrigued by the show and the modern interpretation of David and Goliath but I must say, and I think I speak for most of America, when I say that I'm just about tired of the token gay character in every TV show. I understand that making Jack gay offers more opportunities for drama and story writing but I, WE in America, are just sick of seeing that thrown in our faces with every new show. Given what I know of the biblical friend relationship of David and Jonathan (Jack), I'm afraid where this show is going to try and take that relationship if Jack is gay. Not sure if I'll keep watching or not.

I thought I was the only one picking up on the biblical connotations in this movie/show. It's good to know there are others who know the Bible. I'm actually enjoying watching this show to see what other biblical similarities I can recognize. Thanks much for making this movie/show.

OMG! the Bible characters r coming into life through Kings! As a born again Christian and a parent I realize that, with all the visual tecnology that has captured our youth today, it has become so difficult to keep their attention in the books and read, Especially to read the BIBLE in this tie and age.

I would like to use this as a tool to open up my kids eyes to books of the BIBLE that they may not be so quick to go through and read. Please be very careful though and not change what has been writtan by The Almighty God. As you know Jesus Christ warned that if anyone changes but 1 word in the scriptures be ready to meet your maker, hint and its not God The Father of Jesus Christ.

AWESOME SHOW - LOVE THE BIBLICAL REFERENCES AND the intrigue, though the God thing isn't overdone and the way the show works with modern-day similiarities and realties is working really well. Love the show's background music ~ gorgeous.

I just watched the first 3 episodes at Fancast.com and am telling my friends and family about the show. Besides "LOST" - KINGS is my new favorite thing to watch on TV. Great time slot too. I hope it stays on Sunday 8PM and won't be moved around. Ian McShanes character is so intense when he and his son Jack have that exchange on the steps...and then when the head of ministry tells Silas he's fallen from grace as well as the scene where the King grabs Capt. Sheperd and puts him in his place. I would tell anyone who hasn't begun watching this show, it's still evolving and even if you don't watch it from the beginning you can still enjoy this show. Watch the previous episodes online!

First show in a LONG time that I just can't wait to watch... I love the writing, the gradual development of the rhythm and style of RKG's spoken language... and it does seem as if the audience is being 'eased' into it...

Kudos to NBC - nice to see a major network going out on a limb...

is it david vs goliath or is david in kings like solomon? Either way it's great writing, awesome acting, and a beautiful score. Let's hope it keeps its Biblical undertones. (I think that is why it has the particular timeslot). (Sunday after church- the lunch/dinner- the family time together- then, good couple time (watching kings together.) Great demographic to hit on a bad timeslot...

(after family day, it can be about the 2 watching the show together... (my wife (religious) and me (believer, but not so religious) can finally come together and watch something that we are both interested in.

Then talk about it and decode it... It's awesome... ..Something revo-evo-lutionary...

Thank you NBC for this new series. Finally I can watch something on TV that has substance, and is not so anti-Christian and anti-God. Someone has realized that the Bible is the best selling book in U.S. history. I was beginning to think that all the networks and all the cable channels had forgotten that there is a large segment of the population who believes there is a God who really cares. Thank you Michael for the Kings. This is the first primetime series that I have watched in years. Thank you sponsors of this series. Thank you for sponsoring a primetime show like the Kings. Finally I can watch something on TV that has real meaning and heart. Please don't do anything to spoil it by catering to those who object. Please don't destroy the character of David to gain a small percentage of new viewers. You will loose far more than you gain.

This series is awful. Why risk substantial $ losses when you can pick up on Deadwood where HBO left off. It was too superb to end so early. Ian McShane was incredible. Go for the gold! M Thomas

THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST DRAMAS TO COME DOWN THE PIKE IN YEARS!!! The filmmakers and actors should be VERY proud. If this show is cancelled, it will be an indication of just how far down American TV has gone. This show is compelling, literate. The acting is absolutely superb, from Mr. McShane, down to the day-players. The Director deserves MAJOR kudos. The look of this show is distinctive, arresting. The ratings sucked? HANG the marketing department! The promos didn't give ANY indication of just what a fine show this is. Watched the first two episodes on Hulu as an afterthought. From now on, plans to watch will be a forethought. I am simply blown away, nearly apoplectic in my inability to express my pleasure. PLEASE, PLEASE CAST ME IN ANYTHING ON THIS SHOW! I'd play BACKGROUND and it'd be a HONOR!!!

It's about time that a show like this has made it to prime time. It proves how relevant stories from the Bible really are. By setting the story of David in modern times shows that history repeats itself. The writers of this series have really struck a chord by modernizing this biblical story. Bravo NBC for airing this series. Please keep it coming.

By Eric | March 28, 2009 10:02 AM | Reply

I cannot believe some of these post. Why can't this show be a show without thinking it relates to god, the bible has a lot of great stories that translate to the screen, it doesn't meen it is real. After read Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas i didn't run out and drop ACID. You bible thumpers need to get a grip on reality , if there is a God he certainly wouldn't take sides, i suppose you guys believe all the Greek gods are hanging out watching Kings as well. I just understand why people cannot be of good Moral Character without the God fantasy.

By Eric | March 28, 2009 10:14 AM | Reply

I love the show. I do not belong to any religious sect. I choose not to because there is no wrong or right to what a person chooses to believe. I love the show because it is a part of history a story from long ago. Just as greek mythology is and others. I am a fan of history and the stories it told. Some are darker than others, but all great stories. I love that they are basing the David and Goliath story for the show. I really hope the show continues, so many good shows are given little chance.

"Kings" has a depth due to the references of the biblical account that most shows must painfully manufacture. Please do not stray too far from the biblical account or this will become just another drama that is only mildly entertaining.

By Molls | March 30, 2009 8:21 AM | Reply

Thank you for creating a riveting, epic drama for network television. I just think it is a shame that NBC is doing a poor job of promoting this show. When I look at the committment made to shows of considerably less quality (*cough* Knightrider *cough*) and the sparse promotion and poor timeslot Kings has been given, I worry. And there's so much going for Kings - the actors, the writers and the production value. All of these people are working to create a great product and I fear the network will cancel it, complaining about high costs and low ratings. There's an abundance of rich storytelling potential - please exploit it and keep entertaining us.

By Bobbie | March 30, 2009 6:08 PM | Reply

My husband and I liked this show. We don't have T.V. so we have to watch it online. We honestly thought it has great potential to be a very popular show. Mr. Green and NBC and whomever else may see this posting... please reconsider Jack's character of being gay. You take the biblical story of 1Samuel regarding King David out of context and it's a shame and even a curse. Whether you believe it or not. I'm glad you've taken the time to be creative in making this a modern day story of King David into a show but the fact of the matter is this: King David and Johnathan "a.k.a. Jack" were real people please do not dishonor them or disrespect who they were. That's the same thing as if you had died and someone made a very bad "character/personality" presentation of who you were in a play or a movie to gain popularity and ratings. (Johnathan did right in the sight of the L-rd and did right to David as well.) I understand that we have homosexual people who watch t.v. as well... but there are other shows they could watch. Please think about it... Jack and David could be the best of friends in this show and we could see a complete turn around of the princes behavior... I'm not the producer and in no way do I have the power to change what I see... just the power of suggestion and voice. If you've done this just to get the "Christian" vote... it's working... but there is that one moral contradiction to our faith... please just think about it. Thanks for taking time to read.

Kings sticks with you. Love it. I'm thinking about it throughout the week and actually discussing it. Sorry to say this, but every TV program I ever fell in love with tanks really quick, probably because I like TV to make me think and most people seem to want to veg in front of the TV. I'll be very sorry to see Kings die.

Does anyone know why this video is no longer available?

By ashively | April 4, 2009 12:33 PM | Reply

Hi ashively:

I really don't know what "video" it is. I guess it must be the CATEGORIES "interviews (1)". If you should click on "This video is no longer available", you will be launched onto a general NBC program web page about various other shows, which includes KINGS. Your browser back button will probably get you back here.

This whole website is a labyrinth. For example, you are commenting at the end of a RECENT POSTS link from the third item down. (right frame above), cause that is where clicking on "Interviews (1)" takes you. So does "INTERVIEWS" tab at top.

RECENT POSTS

Commenting is Fixed [must have been an early start]

The Cast of Kings [there is a video about the production]

Kings Q&A w/ Exec. Prod. Michael Green & Cast [you are here]

Thank you for visiting [has the most comments; check it out]

If, under CATEGORIES, you should click on Video (1) you will be catapulted into the second item with its own set of comments. That video will show you promotional material for the series.

Now you have only partiallly peeled away the onion. Notice at the top of the Window, there are MAIN INTERVIEWS VIDEO and FORUMS.

You probably got into this set of POSTS through either clicking on INTERVIEWS at top or INTERVIEWS at side. Similarly if you should click on VIDEO at top, you will end up in The Cast of Kings.

Now FORUMS is a new country. If you click on FORUMS you are taken to a place which a whole lot of Topics. If you wish to contribute, you will have to Register with some name you pick out and a password. You could spend hours checking them all out.

And there you have as much as i have been able to figure out.

BTW: If you want to watch the most current episode you will have to go elsewhere than Court Historian. I did it, i don't remember exactly how. HULU links to it. The main NBC web page also links to it. There is some start-stop in viewing (buffer filling/emptying) depending on your connection speed.

If you have a Windows machine there is a link to a free program that lets you save (I have a MAC and they haven't gotten there yet.)

Let it do its stuttering, and then come back later and replay it. It should run smoothly then. You also get polite 30 second commercials; don't try to skip through them.

With a website like this:

"To tell the time, you have to know how to build a watch":)

I agree with lots of other commenters on various blogs and the FORUMS that KINGS is a great series.

You must not try to make it follow the bible literally. Situations may be based on bible situations, but chronology and characters may be mixed. For example: Saul’s son Jonathan saves David whom he has befriended from Saul; he does not plot against him, and dies with him in battle. It is Absalom, one of David’s sons who leads a revolt against King David.

If you look for David in 1 Kings or 2 Kings, he isn’t there. Neither is Saul. You have to go to 1 Samuel and 2 Samuel to find their exploits, sins, and victories. Then you must skip over the two books of Kings to 1 Chronicles, Chapter 10 to find a narrative about Saul and David. Chronicles omits the David and Goliath story and the Bathsheeba affair. History was rewritten by omission even back then.

Samuel is the prophet who anoints Saul (the tallest and most favored) as King. Then after Saul disobeys the word of God, he anoints David (look not on his outward appearance, but on the inner things of his heart) to be King. As a courageous man, he later rebukes King David for his murder of Bathsheeba’s husband, Uriah.

In the book of Judges that precedes Samuel there is a horrendous tale of gang rape which leads to the destruction of most of the tribe of Benjamin (chapters 19 – 21). Then it is renewed by giving captive women to the survivors. The book of Judges ends with “In those days in Israel there was no king; every man did what was right in his own eyes”. In KINGS, Silas utters that phrase in justification of a decision he makes.

I speculate that Thomasina may be David’s Bathsheeba after she breaks with Silas. There is a strong hint of that break in “Insurrection”. David first though will marry Michelle, but she will reject him because of a perceived indiscretion and die childless. (This would parallel the events in the marriage of Michal, Saul’s daughter, to David.).

KINGS is what I would term social Science Fiction. It takes very ancient events, and places them into a future high-technology society. (It’s kind of like a story where Sodom and Gomorah are destroyed by a nuclear device.)

An even better example was the Star Trek episode (how many years ago when more TV programming was greater and more original than today) where they land on a planet with a “Romans” vs “Followers of the Sun” (but it is really Son)” scenario. They had mid 20th century technology, weapons, and televised gladiator contests.

I wish that NBC could return to the "golden age" when there were dramatic shows with thoughtful content. Recall Hill St. Blues, all the Star Trek shows, Deep Space Nine, and many more. Also those multi-session mini-series.

Regards

Looking forward to tonight's show. I wish that NBC would publicize it more. Last night on the local station (Phoenix, AZ) during the evening news they promoted Apprentice 2 with Donald Trump, but not a word about KINGS.

I hope there is no intention to let the series die. It is one of the most original to be aired for a long time. The alternate reality or future scenario based on an ancient story is great.

I hear it is also being currently broadcast on the Sci Fi channel.

This is a great show; it's so much better than the dumbed down "reality" shows that seem to dominate the ratings. I don't understand why subsequent episodes haven't been promoted as much as the pilot was. Or why it's being moved to 8pm on a Saturday night. It could have at least been on at 9 before SNL. Anyway, I love this show. Long live the KINGS.

By Alayna | April 13, 2009 3:06 PM | Reply

Hi Alayna: I completely agree with you and others that this is one of the most original and well done shows for a long time.

I never watch the dysfunctional family, young thugs in training, or other reality shows (Top Dog excepted).

I looked forward to the Sunday evening show and was disappointed to find it replaced by some "Mystery Music Man" show which i would never watch. Perhaps they thought the show was inappropriate for Easter Sunday.

I hope they follow through and keep it on Saturday evening and PROMOTE IT as they did prior to the first episode.

I don't often have time to sit in front of a television at specified times. I turn to online episodes to "catch-up" on favorites and evaluate new series. I was not all that impressed when the trailers for the show were released and did not take the time to watch any episodes until recently.
I am hooked and disappointed to learn that it will be canceled, just as I have decided to become a fervent fan.

While the stories are somewhat interesting and familiar, it is the poetic way in which the story is told that has made me so appreciate that there is a show of this caliber in the media. The reminiscent Shakespearean tones and melodic use of rhythm and subtlety make this a rare gem in my eyes, similar to Heroes, yet surpassing because of the lack of public pandering which Heroes submits to (not that it makes me enjoy Heroes less because of the show's constant complexity).

I will continue to watch this show online for as long as it is available and would be very excited to learn that NBC has changed its mind and decided to run Kings for at least another season.

I am so so sad to lose my favorite new characters. How can a network be so ignorant as to change a show's time slot after so few of us got a chance to see what we were missing! Please reconsider! Put it in a time slot and leave it there - and I promise, your audience will come.

I have never blogged, called in to a talk show, accessed a fan website, or made any comments what so ever on a Network website. I just found out Kings was not being picked up. Wow, that is a shame - this is a great series. I am so sick of the morally depraved brain candy offered by the inane reality shows that flood the networks. We finally have a creative series with a great story and NBC cannot stick by it until it catches fire. What a pity and a sad commentary. I suppose this will be replaced by Hollywood Cougars Plastic Surgery Mishaps. Way to go NBC!

It is another disappointment by NBC! They just cant seem to get the formula correct for success. The time is right for a story line that depicts the range and depths of both the human tragedy and mannishness that is captured in the lives of those worthy of Biblical history. It is a story that could be set in the past, current, or future and still hold true to who we are. I am truly sorry to see a network miss out on capturing its fare share of the market by jumping boat to soon. Way to go NBC!

I can't beleive that NBC is going to yet again cancell a great show (anyone else remember the Black Donnelly's). NBC needs to remember that not even Friends, Everybody Love's raymond etc...took several seasons to build a following and become top shows. It's time for the exec's who think they know what we want to pull thier head's out of their a** and wake up.

Yet again disappointed by NBC.

Kings has got to be the best show on television. The writing is amazing...the actors are terrific. I am so upset NBC is cancelling this show. How can NBC cancel a show that is intelligent, riveting and extremely entertaining! There are so few shows on that are truly classy. Please reconsider!! There are intelligent people who want to watch shows such as Kings. We are all not reality show fanatics. Please keep us happy too.

I am enjoying this show. I missed the first episode and waited for the rerun. Now, I cannot wait for the next episode.

Recently, I have been reading the entertainment sections of the national news-webpages. Different authors are stating Kings will not be in the Fall lineup. Not only is this a colossal mistake, but a lack of creativity and management on the part of NBC's executive team. One article stated NBC was spending close to 4 million per episode for Kings. If this is true, what inane executive is handling the budget, someone deaf and dumb? The most basic viewer understands the principle of show-life status: in the beginning inexpensive episodes building viewer base, gradually increasing to more lavish and expensives sets and talent.

Kings reflects a writer taking a chance to respin an old and enjoyable tale with fresh life and modern touch. Ending this show will only demonstrate NBC has no faith in their writers, actors or viewers.

I have also never commented on any blog or fan website or network. And I agree with the comments already made a hundred percent. I can't wait to see the next episode. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DON'T CANCEL THIS SHOW!!!! it is like a breeze of fresh air! FINALLY something worthwhile to watch on American television.

This is probably going to seem like an insane question but does anyone know if the new ergonomic chair that the queen put in for the king is a Steelcase Leap? I am almost sure it is. I was just curious abecause I am thinking of getting one and wanted to tell my wife I had the same chair as King Silas. LOL! Thanks!

Gay people are part of life regardless of anyone's religious beliefs. WE are EVERYWHERE and just because we're not marching in parades or wear leather thongs doesn't mean we're invisible. Do you really think the world is 100% straight??

The gay son who would be king just makes the show all the more rich and interesting!

I'm sorry that YOU (who is 'WE'?) IN AMERICA feel that we're being 'thrown' in your face but we are here, and have always been here in every aspect life, in every human society and culture and the only way to 'end' homosexuality is to kill off humanity itself!

SAVE KINGS!!!! The marketing of this show was horrible. I didn't even know about the show until finding it by chance on HULU. I watched the first episode out of curiosity and was totally hooked! I've told several friends about the show and they're all hooked now too! Take a chance! Bring it back in the Fall with some good marketing and it'll be one of your top shows!

ALL OR MOST OF THE GREAT TV SERIES' HAVE ALL HAD ROUGH STARTS WITH RATINGS, BUT THEY ULTIMATELY BECOME CULT CLASSICS; TAKE STAR TREK THE ORIGINAL SERIES. I BELIEVE IT WAS ALSO ALMOST CANCELED AFTER ITS DEBUT. WE RECOGNIZE AND APPRECIATE THE VALUE OF THIS SHOW BECAUSE WE LOVE ITS INTELECTUAL LEVEL AND WE CAN SEE THAT THIS IS ONE OF THE FEW PROJECTS DESTINED FOR GREATNESS.

It is a shame that NBC is more concerned with profit margins than with airing a TV show that encourages veiwers to question our own political culture (and where it is heading) and that deals with what a modern-monarchy would look like. Granted this is no West Wing, but are we too choose only between self-absorbed, prime-time soap operas and reality TV?

Was yesterday's show the series finale or the season finale. I do hope they are bringing it back for a second season. I look forward to watching it every week and will really miss it UNTIL it returns.

Honestly...I have to say that this show is the BEST show that I have ever seen on NBC...by far. I am begging you to bring it back for a second season and give it a chance. This show should have been advertized a lot more than it was and it would have been a smash hit! I am so disappointed in NBC by taking this show out, it's a shame! PLEASE DONT CANCEL THIS ONE!
