If you watch Kings -- and we strongly recommend you do -- you'll find in the show a gentle-faced character named Perry who follows King Silas wherever his day takes him.
He is not an assistant or scheduler or policy pusher -- Silas has plenty of those... Perry, for his profession, stands politely behind and to the King's left and meticulously scribbles down all he sees and hears.
His official title is Court Historian.
When we were given the opportunity to design a website where "we" -- the writers, producers, directors and, yes, the actors too -- could communicate directly with the viewers... that felt like the right idea. Which brings us here.
Welcome... To Kings and Court Historian.
Thank you for checking us out. Our goal is to post regularly as Kings begins its run on March 15... to answer your questions... show off pictures... flesh out the stories... to tell you what happened to make Kings happen. We may not be as diligent as faithful Perry, but we'll do our behind-the-scenes best.
It's been about two and a half years since Kings cracked its eggshell. Too much coffee on a sleepless morning -- some of it spilled on my robe and laptop -- followed by 30 months of pushing Kings, its characters, and the complex world they inhabit, steeply uphill. The number of people who came to help roll the boulder against gravity, suffering the stumbles, skinned knees and rude roots along the way are too many to count... Directors, writers, actors, designers, editors, crew, friends... people at studio and network... Without every one of them we wouldn't have a show to air.
Deep gratitude. Two and a half years' worth.
And now we're less than a week away... and can't wait to air already.
Last thing for now: If you like the pilot but are nervous about investing in a show that could get cancelled just as you're getting into it... good news. We had the (very) rare opportunity to write, produce and complete our entire first season -- 12 episodes, including our two-hour pilot -- before our first airing... They're just burning in our pocket. So no fears of a story started and unfinished.
We hope it's the first of many seasons... but even if it isn't we're all proud of the work we've done.
We hope you tune in... we hope you like it... we hope to hear from you...
Michael Green

Wow! A television program using biblical themes! Congratulations...the premiere was excellent. You're doing a terrific job...the cast is superb, the storyline is great. People don't realize that there is nothing new under the sun; the Bible is replete with themes about every human condition and emotion. This should be LOTS of fun! Everything looks great from the backgrounds, to costumes, special effects, good writing, great imagination. I applaud you. Keep up the high standards and good work. It's nice to see something different and entertaining. I wish you the best and hope this catches on! After all, David is a major figure...
Blessings,
Patricia Woods
Congratulations on the show! I am alredy eager to know what comes next in the upcoming episodes!
As i was watching, i came across a few biblical parallels, and was wondering whether or not they actually had any connection with the Bibal. My first question was whether or not the butterflies had any true connection with the Bibal, and if so, how did you interpret it from the Bibal into the show? However,if not, why did you decide to make it a continous figure throughout the first episode? My second question is if David and Jack end up becoming friends, just like they did in the Bibal? I am wondering because based on the previews for next week, and from this past episode, i saw a negative vibe from Jack towards David.
Thanks so much,
cant wait for the next episode, and the rest of the season!
Best of luck,
Alexa Eshaghian
Congratulations! the show was amazing, i really enjoyed it!
I was just wondering if Sailis is supposed to represent Saul. I am asking this because in the bible Saul gets jealous David and his close connection to God. In your show it seemed as if at the very last scene Sailis becomes jealous that David is crowned with butterflies meaning he is meant to be king. I was also wondering of Jack and David will end up becoming friends as apposed to being mad at each other for their accomplishments. In the bible the relationship between David and Jonathan is very close and i found it very interesting that you interpreted that into Jack (Jonathan) being gay.
Again, i really enjoyed watching your show and i cant wait for the next episode.

I have studied the Old and New Testaments as well as other religious texts and was bored beyond belief with this show. Couldn't even finish watching.
The young "warrior" who removed his protective gear to rescue the hostages who were still on the front line (not credulous), and doesn't put on face paint and then doesn't get dirty. Not credible.
The show only needs two elements added: acting and writing.
Dude,
It's fiction.... it's entertainment.... and in my opinion, one of the most compelling, thought provoking shows that modern television has to offer. Keep in mind, the main premise of the show is to highlight the alternate of modern day democracy to a life-style of modern day totalitest monarchy. It's not a show highlighting theology, my humble suggestion...... relax, simmer down and take stock in the fact that this show is intended, not for religious enlightenment but rather, for a great escape from a hectic week.
This comment is intended for the author named "T Myers" as listed in the above comment.

It strongly reminds of the the OUT OF ASHES series of books. Only thing missing was mutiants. I kept waiting for it to click or engage or just really get on with the story. Like a really bad historical romance novel set in "the king's court" in modern times ... can only get better ... I hope ... I am sure some really hard work went into the show but I'd rather spend time with a book ...
Mr.Green,
Everyone involved in this project should congratulate themselves. The show is brilliant, subtle and interesting. As a grad student I have little time for entertainment and watching this every week will be a treat I intend to give myself. Thank you for providing viewers with a quality program and treating us as if at least some of us possess the intelligence to keep up with you. Good luck, I'll be watching.
I like this show thus far. I like the parallel story to the story of King David, King Saul, and Jonnathan. Jonnathan wasn't gay, though, neither was David. They were best friends. The gay agenda is placed in nearly all television today. This isn't an enhancement. Once again we have to gleen any decent story line or Spiritual content from worldly Hollywood. I did find a parallel with a futuristic Antichrist theme. I'd like to see how that developes. I hpoe they don't warp the Bible story too much more.
Well, I for one, am hooked. The pilot was incredible, and I'm really looking forward to tonight's episode. I am grateful for Michael Green's assurance that all the episodes have been filmed so we shouldn't worry about Kings being canceled prematurely. I heard ratings weren't so great for the pilot (and realise that it will take awhile for word of mouth to find new viewers) so I must admit some worry, especially since so many reviews and articles are talking about it being canceled before it finds its audience.
I watched the first show and i enjoyed it. As a christian I am happy that it had biblical references and i appluad the attempt to bring the bible to the world if that is your intention if not God says his word will not go out void and already I saw that someone was asking questions about biblical parallels If this show sparks peoples interest in learning about God than to God be the glory If not I will still enjoy your show
CONGRATS
`I dunno about this show, am watching the pilot right now and was hoping i could get back to this site to find out why these americans are in a monarchy??? no dice,... however...then i saw something that said "alternate universe".. what is that? can anyone tell me?... is this in the future???...or after the revolution we started a monarchy instead of a democracy/republic?...well, i am going to get back to the show for a few more min. if any one has any insight in to my issues with where and how these events relate to real life let me know,
Okay, I am completely hooked on the show already. Tonight's episode is on my agenda and I am anxious to see what happens next. Thank you for writing and producing something new and original for television!
it's pretty good. i'll watch again...
The premier episode was watched here by three generations, and fueled some great discussions afterwards.
As for the allegory properties, we found the biblical references to be but one layer of the onion. We detected bits of Shakespearean plots, and other literary allusions... or so we think. There was so much happening on so many levels, I am certain that when the season's DVDs appear they will be snapped up and watched over and over.
As for our household, you will have 5 regular viewers from 15 to 72 years old!
Yeah George, i thought i smelled an arthurian reference with the watch, when the bishop said "if you can fix it you deserve it"...i likened that to the sword in the stone
i'm intriqued with this show, it has links to the writer/creaters that did/do "smallville", correct?... "smallville" is great, it is why i am giving this crazy "alternative universe" crap a chance.
always rich with symbolism
I've watched the two episodes now and I am hooked. This is a new show, new idea that I haven't seen already. I'm glad this isn't another OC or Beverly Hills. It has really made me think and I'm not sure whats going to happen next. This is exciting!
good show i'll watch it again with pleasure.
I missed the premiere last Sunday but caught it on Hulu.com during the week. Since then I've watched the premiere all the way through again.
I think it's one of the most interesting new shows to come along since "Heroes." I posted a comment on Facebook telling my friends how much I enjoyed and posted the link back to Hulu so they could check it out for themselves.
I love the fact that it parallels biblical history, but at the same time the story does not follow it exactly. There are fascinating similarities and yet the differences enhance the story as well.
In addition, the casting for the show was outstanding. I think the main characters of King Silas, David, Reverend Samuels, and others, all add to the richness of the new series. Well done and I can't wait to see the new episodes as they come along.
Great show! Just read the comments and see that some folks realize that one source is from 1st and 2nd Samuel and 1st and 2nd Chronicles. It got me interested in how many parallels I could find other than the obvious ones. Anything that gets me to read the Bible more is a good thing. As a Christian I’m glad to see any reference to God and the Bible in main stream media. Hope it gets more folks to actually read the Truth from the Bible so they will know what it says as opposed to the fiction you have created from using the Bible as an inspiration. Keep up the good work. Sue
I think this show is something we all need. Something new, something different, something to make you think. For all those who are so obsessed with the bible and literature, yes there are alot of "symbolism" and "biblical" reference. For all those who are not obsessed with it, don't cut the show short out of protest. It is an amazing tale of how one person can change the world. Isn't that what we need today? Hope? I absolutly love everything about it and my only fear is that it does get cancelled because these types of shows usually do. I know they are set or a full season, but so was Jerica. What happens after this season? I just hope that the people iin charge realize what a gem they have nad that we can all enjoy such an amazing piece of art. Way to go and best of luck! (and if there are typo's I apologize, I am typing in the dark :) )
Two episodes in and I am loving it. I can see this show having the same following that Jericho enjoyed. I'd send nuts anywhere if it meant saving this show. ;o) Well done!
I love the show!!! I am so bummed tonight because i missed it. I had a school function with my son. So I am waiting for it to be on the internet, but it's still not there. Just wondering when you will add (tonight) last nights show?
I have to agree with all of you Im hooked.but this show I belive we will soon see is much more than a modren christan telling of the story of David and Goilith.I think we will see a much deeper story much as we saw on battle star galitica as long as this show isnt canceled. It seems good tv on the three old majior net works NBC ABC CBS soon gets canceled to be replaced by mindless realty shows or endless hospital shows. with the entire cast all sleeping together mc dreamey mcsteemey and Mc queeney
I am completely hooked!! Love the show.
WOW! This show is so complex, I absolutely love it. A total departure from regular television, and if I miss an episode, I can watch on NBC.com. Fabulous!
Im hooked second episode and Im a fan now great writing as long as you dont start dragging it out and keep the script moving Im a new found fan Great work and refreshing new idea for a long over due TV audience
This show is great...My entire family is intrigued by the mistique of the characters and kudos to all of you involved in this presentation...Love it...
I enjoy the show, the draw for me to watch an NBC series, because my family normally doesn't, is that my Son, James Hipp is a featured brother of David Shepherd. I am anticipating him to be in more of the episodes. I can't wait to see him agian in the futute episodes that alone has me hooked. Though I will say I am intrigued by the story line.
Well I caught the second episode last night and couldn't wait to come to work and watch the first one. It did take up most of my morning and my production was down, but for someone like me who lives in books it was incredable. It has alot of biblical likeness to it but I also see a Shakespearian touch to it. In the way people speak and act. I can't wait till next week keep it coming!
I wish there was alittle more background and perhaps a larger map. But otherwise it is an interesing show.
(I think I posted this in the wrong place, originall... forgive if it shows up twice.)
Gotta say, this it the first show in a LONG time that I just can't wait to watch... I love the writing, the gradual development of the rhythm and style of RKG's spoken language... and it does seem as if the audience is being 'eased' into it...
Kudos to NBC - nice to see a major network going out on a limb... I hope the excellent creative team and cast are well rewarded.
(BTW, am I the only one that thinks Chris Egan looks uncannily like the late Heath Ledger? It just about breaks my heart.)
Really, lovely show. Thanks again.
"Jonnathan wasn't gay, though, neither was David. They were best friends."
How nice to have someone who knew them personally clear that up for us...
Kudos to all involved, especially Mr. Green for shepherding such a product from imagination to fruition on film. I loved all the allusions -- be they biblical or literary. I look forward to watching and discussing all 12 episodes. I have something to watch on Sunday evenings. Before there was only DEXTER or MYSTERY!.
Thank you.
Come on, all you religio-centric christians! There is not one single reference to the bible in either episode so far. This show is far too complex to be just about your religion. All monarchies in all times have had these family/political intrigues, and by the way, christians do not have a monopoly on a supreme being! The writers are clearly calling upon all of human history to craft archetypal characters and plots that actually engage thinking viewers. It's unfortunate if anyone regards this as a "christian" show. Those are on other cable networks.
Thanks, show staff, for creating a show that more than spoon-feeds the masses.

We love it !!! My wife and i just watched the 2nd episode for the 2nd time on HULU ... great job NBC !!
I watched this show for the first time last night, 3/22/09, purely by accident. I was just looking for something to have on in the background as I folded laundry and cleaned up the kitchen.
I'd never heard of the show as I am an infrequent TV watcher, yet as I was scanning the channel guide something in the descriptive blurb caught my eye so I thought I'd check it out. Well, I did finally get my chores done by scurrying around during the commercial breaks. But other than that, during the show itself I sat in rapt attention.
Today, I caught up on the first episode, online. It has been a long time since a TV series has captured my attention. Generally, I find TV shows to be too boring and insipid to make it worth my while to sit through the commercial breaks. However, "Kings" intrigues me enough that for now, I will watch and make use of the commercial breaks to take care of chores.
I'll keep watching for a while.
I've really enjoyed the pilot, surprisingly enough.
I don't have cable or time to really sit and watch TV on Sunday nights, so I've had to catch up in my spare time throughout the weekdays.
I really hope the show does not get canceled because of ratings, because I know there's a large fanbase on the internet!
Good luck!
This is an important show.
Awesome show!!!!!!!!!!!!
very clever and innovative.
START WRITING NEXT SEASON'S PREMIER!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome show!!!!!!!!!!!!

START WRITING NEXT SEASON'S PREMIER!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great Show. This show is piecing together the old testament, possibly some new testament, and possibly other religious influence, and then converting them into modern times. Not saying its a savior like Silias or David but KINGS is giving us a modern look at biblical references so we can see what happened.
Love the show.

I have to agree with the few people who have comented this show is not about christians or any thing judeo christian. Is a good piece of science fiction baced on human arch types the david and Golith story can be seen not only in the west but in hinduisum buddissum taoism and cofussium. If any thing I see conections to shakespear listen to the way thay talk THIS IS ABOUT ALL MANKIND NOT JUST CHRISTIANS IF IT MAKES YOU READ YOUR BIBLE GOOD JUST DONT TAKE WHAT YOU READ IN YOUR BIBLE AS LITERAL ITS NOT THE EARTH ISNT 5000 YEARS OLD AND DINOSAURS DID EXIST. We are all human lets not look down on people who belive different love different or live different than you.We are all one as humans KEEP AN OPEN MIND
One last thing guys dont let the people who say this is a christan baced show turn you off from this excelent well done science fiction show.If yOUR a sifi fan you will love this alternate universe.Remember washington was offered to be crouned king but refused. who is to say in some alternate universe he said YES (:})
Kings is "fantabulous"!!!! I am absolutely hooked and am telling all of my friends to watch. The dialogue is so clever, the pacing of the scenes just keeps you rivted .... "what's going to happen next?". Love, love, love Ian McShane as the King - he's so believable and knows how to deliver a simple phrase with so much impact / doule entendre!
You have made a show that everyone will love
Very intriguing show. I don't quite understand why some people feel the need to bite heads off when anyone suggests that it's based on the literature of the Bible; can't we get something good out of that? Of course it's not the same, and nobody has said it's a "Christian show", whatever in the world that would mean.
It's good writing, taking timeless topics (which, yes, do draw heavily from the old testament) and laying them out for artistic embellishment. Not sure I like what they've done with the character of Jonathan (not just the gay thing; he seems far too hateful and vindictive), but given his position, it makes sense.
Awesome show Im totally hooked. I now hope it will be able to produce.
Anyone know the song that David Shepherd was playing on the piano?
I love it.
Wonderful show - well cast and compelling! So well-acted, directed and written. My niece and father love it too.
I watch zero 'reality' tv, zero talk shows and zero NCI/Law & Order clones shows, so it is great to have something good to watch, in addition to Friday Night Lights, Lost and House.
I watch at least 65% of my shows online, btw, either first or as a re-viewing.
As a family with many little (and not so little) kiddos, and parents who were both theater majors, we all enjoy good TV shows.
But as a Christian family with strong morals, we haven't found very many that we are willing to watch.
At first we were skeptical of Kings as we know that the media is not so fond of Christianity, and we were afraid that the true meaning, power and drama of King David's story from the bible would be butchered.
We watched the first episode and we were quite amazed.
Not only is it decently accurate, but it has good morals, acting, directing, photography, and a great script.
All in all, it is like watching a work of art.
We will definitely be following Kings closely.
So far it is something we feel like the whole family can see, and are very appreciative of how "family friendly" it is.
Thank you SO much for creating a show that is truly something for everyone, and being bold enough to speak about Christianity in the midst of it.
It's very encouraging, Mr Green. Thank you again.
Many blessings on you all!
~The Clarks
What an incredible show! I just found this show on hulu and was instantly hooked!
I watched the first two episodes on Hulu. THANK YOU FOR POSTING THEM THERE! Because I would have missed ONE great show! NBC has my Monday nights and now they have my Sunday night too.
Dear Clarks,
Let me once again point out that not one single time in either episode so far has the bible (old or new testament), jesus christ, or anything pertaining to christianity been part of the script. Talking about/belief in god is not the exclusive prerogative/territory of christians. I'm glad you've found something for the whole family. But for god's sake, let us all take what we want from the show without you christians claiming all the credit and the moral high ground....again.
Ok, long story short - your website is pissing me off which makes me not want to bother watching the show. Put a link to the "Character Profiles" which you so prominently display in the homepage's TITLE somewhere on the homepage so I can figure out who's who (nbc's woefully inadequate advertising campaign has only alerted me TONIGHT - well after the second episode - that there's a new Ian McShane show I should check out). I've spent over an hour looking for a "Character Profiles" section on your website to no avail. So I give up.
Don't go away S!!!! You can read the character's profile at this site: http://www.kingswiki.com/
KINGS is a masterpiece.
Great show!
Why is everyone all upset with the christians on this site? Yes, the story of David is in the Christian Bible, but the last time I checked it was in the old testament, meaning its part of the Hebrew (Jewish) Bible too. Of course Jesus isn't mentioned in the show. He came around about a thousand years later.
As a Christian I can enjoy this show for what it is, a great show with entertaining similarities to the biblical story of David. Am I worried about the differences? No. If people want to know the biblical story they can read the Bible, which I'm doing again, mostly so I'll catch more of the parallels. Am I trying to make it a "Christian" show?(Whatever that means) No! It's obvious they wrote the parrallels purely for entertainment purposes, and that's what I'll take it as.
I just finished the pilot episode, and I am blown away by the show's connection to modern life, despite its premise as an alternate universe. The camera angles were fantastic, and the actors successfully portrayed the vices that linger in current life--in politics, in people we know. Most of all, I love the aspect of the butterflies as Shiloh's symbol and a representation of God's will. I have never been into Lost, or Heroes, or ER, but this is a show I will keep an eye on. Thank you so much!
Great pilot episode!!! Wow, how about that David, eh? I'm fastenated with this show, and deeply enjoy the biblical story this show is founded on. Keep this kind of quality up and you'll be recieving shiny statues in no time.
I really enjoyed the show and cannot wait to see the next episode. Now I have two must see shows--Heroes and Kings!
I have corrupted my spouse who despises one hour television shows. I made him watch two episodes on Hulu, and now he is asking when will the next episode be on. He is officially addicted to Kings.
Love this show! My wife and I watch it every Sunday. I just read through 1 & 2 Samuel; very cool (and accurate) juxtaposition. We have been telling all our friends and love the actors. Keep up the good work!
I highly recommend reading "David: Biblical protraits of power" by Marti J. Steussy and publiced by University of South Carolina Press in 1999. Dr Steussy paints a complex protrait of David and one that will provoke a new look at this most famous and intriging bibilical character. She examines Psalms, I Chronicles and I and 2 Samuel and shows the reader both David's role by showing the implications and relationship between divine power and wordly power. David will not be the same to you after reading this book!
I have watched all the episodes and suddenly I am lost. The Princess's vow???? The kings "other" family??? The disease of the other son??? Did I miss something? Please help!!!!
I'm hooked on the King and disheartened by what I've read in the trades that a second season is doubtful. Say it ain't so! I look forward to Sunday nights now, with a relish I don't recall since watching Disney's Magical World of Color when I was a kid!
I have to compliment you not just on the creativity behind this show, but on the skill you have in writing it. The language and the rhythm you use is so mesmerising, that I feel as if I'm watching Shakespeare. The dialogue between the King and Samuels is positively hypnotic, and beautifully weighty. This show thrills me, every single time I watch.
Thank you so much for creating it. It is very much appreciated.
Eva
Long live the Kings! Thank you for this amazing interpretation of the story (and for reviving my Solomon Schechter crush on David). Just a Commoner of the Third House happy to see her fave Benjaminites again (nice job weaving in and creating your own midrashim, too!). You should know that hardcore Hitchens/Dawkins atheists I know are poring over the Prophets because they want "spoilers!!!" How's that for "Greatest Story Ever Told?"
I love this show...keep up the good work
I am glad we will get at least 1 season...rumor has it that the execs are nervous about season 2
Try promoting the show a bit more maybe your viewership will improve...give the ratings a chance before passing judgement.
I am in!
Excellent show, too bad it's doing poorly on ratings,.... it would be a shame not to see it all the way through,....
We keep loosing great shows, I have no idea what people are looking for, when such quality shows are overlooked and ignored.
Hopefully we'll get to watch the full season...
The last episode "First Night" was ,
I hope ,
just a stumble along the way for the show.
After a WAR!
and
Hostage Rescue
and
Tank Killing
and a
"Sniper" threat episode ,
the viewer gets ,
ballet?!
and
2 gay Caballeros going out clubbing,
gossip ?!
I don't see Joe Six Pack and Mary Sue Soccer Mom
tuning again next week after a hard day at work
at a job they hate
to find that,
again.
Reverend Samuels says the king must
"face life as a man"
then the king is back, with a bargain? with god?
while
a story line that had just opened up was closed.
Sure!
there was plenty of Ian McShane
who has been at the top of his game
for years now.
Anything!! TV show or movie he does
will get a look from his fans
that want to see this
honey-baked Ham, chew up a scene and deliver lines like nobody can .
Let's hope it will last.
If it does not enough attract viewers
than this wasn't the project .
Every fan of Ian Mcshane was disappointed by
no real resolution to Deadwood
and
was hoping for perhaps a Deadwood theatrical release.
The vulgar language aside,
the writing,
the rest of the casts acting in Deadwood
was terrific
and
the amazing art direction laid groundwork for art direction seen in the John Adams mini series which won award after award.
I don't see as strong a supporting cast here.
Susanna Thompson says it's like "soap opera?"
your gonna need more than that,
to compete against all the choices
people have
to turn to
for their entertainment
in this day and age.
I agree, "WOW" and Congrats are in order. Just three episodes in and I am truely captivated. I find myself gripped with anticipation and a incredible sence of thrill as I watch your progam. The story concept could not be more interesting and the setting (a alternative universe New York in a sence) gives the show a sub reality that draws me in. I don't watch television, but I will watch KINGS.
I love this show, I have to say though that there hasn't been much advertisement for it, I couldn't even find many youtube videos for it! Which is always a surprise because youtube has everything lol. I first saw it on hulu, which is a great site for finding excellent shows. I just have to say though that i've seen a few people's comments are literally comparing it to the bible and complaining that some of the things that happen in the show aren't staying true to the bible. And i'd have to say that's the whole point! They've taken a classic idea and brought it to another level. Using the saul and david passages from the bible they've given it a modern spin and I love that! I'm in my twenties and i think if they pick up the advertising and get the word spread about the show, that they'll definitely find a fanbase within my age group. I'm hooked so far!
This is a really great show. Everything about it. The plot lines, the characters, the biblical archetypes. It really pulls on the viewers thoughts and emotions - head and heart. Great work and keep it up.
A true fan.
I don't understand why you don't let people read ahead. Your website should really have a copy of the Bible/Torah and show people exactly where you are in the text by highlighting it. The rest is fluff and unnecessary. Sorry.
This show was my idea. I recognized the Queen's "I designed this monarchy" bit as my own. I am really amazed that you made it. I hope. I hope it will benefit you and make you all happy. I've had so many ideas come to fruition that it does not seem fair, but what are we up to now, 3 trillion dollars in ticket sales? Each one is always amazing to me. And it all started with that 1963 novella, favorite of my youth and now lost to history, The Star War.
For 25 years I have been writing the Life of King David and the people around him. Are you at all interested in the real story as a television drama?
I really am into this show and have told my Pastor and associates in a Men's Bible class they should watch it. I loaned a DVD of it to a friend and he has been watching it in stages. He still hasn't caught on to what it is based on. Actually it was not till the second hour when Rev. Samuelson said in effect "God has lifted his spirit from you, he must find someone after his own heart" that i caught on.
The only thing that does not ring true is making Jack/(Jonathan) David's enemy. How is he going to save David from King Silas' wrath when he doesn't show up at the third State banquet?. is King Silas going to take a shot at David while he is playing the Piano for him?.
If you want a possible "prequel" to this post-apocalyptic rendition of a very old story, you might check out my April 1 comment under the "28 comments" link.
I have a question on the structure of this web page, I don't understand why there are four comment (none containing the same) links. I didn't realize it until today when i started to scroll down and found a link to "28 comments", "31 comments", "39 comments", and this one "78 comments". Can anyone enlighten me?. Earlier i found a link to one that had sign-in memberships (I didn't go there). This Court Historian section needs a little more explanation.
I really like this show and will be recording and following it and recording it.
BTW I watched the last episode streaming on this site because my -RW DVD hung up on the last 20 minutes. In future i will not use rewriteables and/or stick with trusty old VHS.

Alexa: Sorry about the duplication. I thought clicking on "Reply" might go to a different place (like under your original comment). Some sites work that way.
Hi Anybody: I finally kind of figured it out. Look at the (toward the end) comment under
"Kings Q&A w/ Exec. Prod. Michael Green & Cast"
Regards:
I have enjoyed your show from the start. I look forward to sunday evenings with Kings.
Great show!! I love the story and the characters. Please keep it going. I am a stay at home mom from TN. I am hooked and will be watching!
Thank You for providing a show that makes you think whether u want to think of it in terms of religion, Christianity/Jewish/Islamic whatever! or in terms of an Atheist....
The way people would like to formulate their interpretation of the unfolding story goes to show that you have a hit on your hands...It is stimulating and refreshing to know that Hollywood hasn't all gone to mindless reality TV...You've done an excellent job in casting and an excellent job in keeping it very interesting.
Congrats! I really hope the show does well I'll be watching
Last night's episode was really good. The not quite biblical parallels are intriguing. The character of Abner is really good.
This is an awesome show!! one of the best on TV. when I saw the comercials for it before hand, I knew I would be watching every episode (and I have from the start). I love that this show is different from most other programs like Desperate houswives, Grey's anatomy, CSI, and Law and Order, ect... it's something new and it has biblical references in it? what? and it's cool? did not think I'd ever see that on TV.
Thanks for making this show and can't wait until next week!!
I first want to say, this show is awesome!!! second, there are a lot of people who think this show is all about the bible, and I can see that there are some references, however, the bible sticks mostly too the Reverend (which makes sense). And then Silas just asks a God for direction. That's pretty much it(and of course, David and Goliath). Others say this is a sci-fi. In all honesty though, everyone just needs to take the show for what it is; an amazingly writen piece that is very intrigueing. Way to go writers! and I can't wait for the next episode!
I love the show. Amazing. Does anybody know where you can get the music from the show? Soundtrack? The music is great. Just wondering if there is a particular artist or torrent or cd available. Any help would be wonderful. Thanks.
I absolutely love this show. I would really hate to see it cancelled. This is the best show I have watched in a long time. I am addicted to it. I can't wait for each episode to come on. The actors are great. The story line is amazing. Keep up the good work.

This show is great and I am already hooked! Not a very religious person, I still caught a lot of the biblical references and am not only fascinated but intrigued. Religion isn't something normally explored too much, certainly not as a main theme for a series; however, so far, it has created a great premise, one which I am very interested to see where it goes. I think this show has the chance to go far, if only more people hear about it. And you don't need to know any religious stories to understand this show; wherever your faith may lie, it is still an absolutely fascinating story! Congrats to everyone involved with KINGS production and great work! I look forward to more.
I just read the Wikipedia entry of Kings and saw the speculation that this series appears to be on the short track to cancellation. That broke my heart; it seems like the really good stories don't get a chance to be told, while instead we get to see "Dancing with the American Idol Apprentices" 24 hours a day.
Since money talks, let me state this plainly: If you were to move this to a pay-cable station, I would subscribe to that station solely for this one show. Rest assured that I will be purchasing the DVDs when they come out.
I know I'm just one consumer, but I have to do what I can.
Oh, hey...since it's an alternate universe, move the darn show to Sci-Fi. It's the same family (NBC/Universal) and they need some sort of quality show now that Galactica is done.
Ian McShane is the most underrated actor thats ever lived...HE'S GREAT, a true classic natural actor and his role as a king in this new show is perfect for him. We need a show like this, strong actors and a story that can go for another 5 seasons. I fully support this show. Great Job on casting Ex OZ cast members too. I think the general public needs to wake up and start watching this. Ian McShane is the best actor thats ever lived. Please dont pull another Deadwood on him. Thanks

What a refreshing story change. The actors were well casted, and the writing is FANTASTIC and smart!!!!Thanks for trusting a post Judeo-Christian audience with a strong and intelligent subject matter. I am looking foward to many seasons.
This is a very interesting, but not original, retelling of the Biblical tale of King Saul, David, and the prophet Samuel.
Looking forward to tonight's show. Judgement Day. I wish that NBC would publicize it more. There wasn't a word about KINGS on the yesterday evening news, though Apprentice 2 with Donald Trump was heavily publicized.
Please don't let the show expire, because you have hidden it's light under a basket (now I am getting biblical:)
This is a very complex web site. I always enjoy going to this page "MAIN" first and sometimes, as now, posting one or more comments. There is also another forums under NBC.com. I haven't completely figured out the relationship between these two sites.
Then i go to the "Forums" where i had to register and login. A couple of days ago there was a lot of trash, spam, and porn, which interfered with finding KINGS topics. Yesterday it seemed to be cleaned up. Hope the Moderators can keep it that way. Lots more in-depth disussions on the plot, history, and characters.
I hear it is also being currently broadcast on the Sci Fi channel.
Always enjoy visiting.
p.s. Sometimes in the past when i try to post (like yesterday) I get:
“Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /system/mt-comments.cgi on this server.”
Therefore; i suggest you save (on a notepad, wordprocessor, etc.) your comments before you hit Submit.
So far i have posted messages on other comment blogs and not had a problem. Hope the webmasters have fixed it.
I'm totally hooked on this series... You have done an excellent job in creating a 20th century kingdom... like in a parallel universe... just totally excellent. I certainly will be tuning into all the episodes till the series is completed. Such wicked treachery, hidden agendas, greed, and mysticism. Quite wonderful.
I love the show--back when I first heard about it...Michael Green creator..."David & Goliath" premise...Ian McShane in the lead...huge scope, I hoped it was for real and wasn't going to be the usual formulatic/claustrophobic mill crap.
You delivered Mr. Green...it's first-rate & 1st Class...in any medium.
Now, let's pray NBC doesn't screw it all up. They've already begun to with their maddening "tinkering", schedule-wise.
Why was there no episode this week? Why was there no explanation for no show this week? Why is NBC jerking us around?!!
I realize the so-call'd "Big Brains" at NBC have brain-stormed and are now switching to Saturday night...but for how long in that slot? Until E.R. runs it's extra 3 episodes, then Kings will move to Thursday night?! Is that the brilliant strategy? Brilliant...NOT! (unless the strategy is to destroy a great series)
To the execs: you guys are screwing up this excellent series...you are BLOWING IT! You must love the basement cuz you're doing everything possible to stay there.
Congratulations! You have surpassed what you set out to achieve. Kudos to the writers, whose words are Shakespearean in their intense quality. I love your cast, and Ian McShane leaves the most wonderous, indelible impressions. We have been riveted since the pilot. We PVR each episode, then watch KINGS before ANY of the other big network shows we tape. Yes. It is THAT good. Hope the NBC brass are reading this. We're telling everyone we know this is THE new show to watch.
I think this is the best show on TV! The cast is wonderful and I look forward to every episode. It seems to me that it has Shakespearing themes along with some biblical references. I'm glad you're moving to Sat night.
I have really enjoyed watching this series. It took some people a bit of time into episode 1 to realize what the story was based on. Then it became all the more fascinating.
It is perhaps coincidence that my church is resuming a Wednesday evening discussion on the book of Samuel. This will be a great opportunity to mention KINGS. Our Pastor and Youth Pastor already know about it.
Regards
....I am absolutely devastated that this show is getting cancelled.
Kings, THE BEST tv show EVER!!!!!!!
I don't usually watch NBC, but I have been lately.
I hope you have at LEAST 1 more season.
If you get rid of Kings, you will lose a viewer.....until you bring Kings back.
Long Live KINGS!! I absolutely LOVE this Show!!! Hope to see it again for many more seasons!! Hail TO KINGS!!
We love KINGS! So unique, interesting, unusual, thank god for the internet so we know it chnaged nights! Keep it coming and we'll be watching!! We wish the show continued success
WE LOVE KINGS!! KEEP the show ON!! unique, interesting, unusual, fascinating...
Mr. Green,
I would agree with Jen's sentiments. This show is thoroughly entertaining while keeping viewers intellectually engaged. It is by far the best new show on TV in recent months. I have even purchased the T-shirt labeled 'be brave now' to help demonstrate my committment to this show, its ideals, wonderful writing and phenomenal production/directing!
Keep up the great work. Keep all of the Kings Court immersed and engaged by the shows creative writing and overall entertainment value!
Your writers and actors clearly have talent, but unless you are willing to throw in the clear contradictions of the OT book of Kings I think this was a dumb idea for a show. Christianity = Lunacy and nothing more. If you really want to make a show that serves a cause for Christianity, try doing something to point out the horror that goes on today under the "Lord's Resistance Army" in Uganda. Those psychopaths are a result of christian idiocy, but rather than correct such ignorance you support ideas that let Christians look away from the problems caused by their failing doctrine of ignorance.
I ignored a couple of parallels and thought the show was good at first, like a fantasy of war, but when I caught on to the biblical idea of the show I was disgusted. Christians in America need to get over themselves and start dealing with real issues. Spreading a religion should be the last thing on your priorities in a world with so much suffering. Grow up, and get over your childhood fairytales. They are not real.
Sir, I do not think this is the place to express your views of Christians.
In case you are wondering I am a christian.
Kings is BASED on stories from the Bible.
First, for Steve who so profoundly hates Christians. You can watch "Kings" and not be afraid to enjoy it. It is taken from the "Old Testament" and not the "New". As you are quite aware, since you are a self-professed expert on Christianity, our (Christians)Standard of Belief comes straight out of that bothersome "New Book". Unless of course, you include all forms of Faith in your diatribe. Then, Sir, I would definitely stop watching this particular program for it is in fact "Faith Based". Not "Christian Based"....."Faith Based". It would not suit you if indeed, as you sound, completely lacking in faith of any kind.....other than in yourself.
Now I get to the program. I love it!!! I hope that the episode that was to be broadcast tomorrow (Sat. Apr 25) will be aired soon. I hope further that the program will stay on the air for a long, long time. It has such a great message....the fine (very fine) line between good and evil. How we can be good and with just enough incentive can give in to our baser instincts. I'm hoping that the other side will be shown also....how those of us who practice evil can be changed....redeemed, if you will. (I so don't want to offend Steve by using the word redeemed...but for his sake I chose not to use the word "saved"...that would have blown his mind forever!!!)
I really....no, REALLY....hope this show comes back in June like I've been lead to believe. It would be sooooooo very refreshing to have a show on TV that tries to make us all a aspire to live a little better while entertaining us in such a wonderful way.
Thanks for listening....you too, Steve....
Shar
Surprise, AZ
Joshua,
Actually this is a great place to protest egocentric christianity in America. Note so many others above who you do not feel offended by for voicing their assumption that it is the complete intention of the writers to spread the faith. I'm not so bold to make that judgment but I still find them at fault for even making it a possibility. As Dawkins so well points out, you religious types are so quick to be offended by other metaphysical views, yet you are quick to say your peace and then use your offense as a means of maintaining the last word.
Shar,
Yes, I am glad and proud of the fact that I have no faith in anything. Faith is a delusion that helps you pretend that you know about that which you really don't know. I am happy to admit that I know very little about the big picture of the universe. Besides, notice how you don't have Jews professing here that this show supports their views, but only the egocentric christians doing such.
Have you ever noticed how there can culturally be such a thing as an Atheist Jew but not an Atheist Christian? The difference: real family values. Christianity is just another ignored elephant in the homes of too many Americans. You pretend that it's based on morals, but then you get too distracted to take part in any real moral cause. Rather, at best you just use it as a way to tell your family members to sit down and shut up whenever it suits you. It doesn't take an expert to know how full of ignorance you are. It's as obvious as an elephant in the room that few ever take responsibility for.
BTW, the word "saved" doesn't offend me, it makes me laugh. There's also a movie titled "Saved" that you should watch some time. It's good, really.
Steve,
Your point on Jews... To be Jewish is to be born by heritage connected to Israel. And yes, you can be a Jew (by blood) and choose to be an atheist. However, Christianity is solely by choice in the first place. Hence making "Christian Atheist" an oxymoron.
I quake in my boots when I ask what member in your family professed to be Christian and when they ran out answers to your questions, told you to "sit down and shut up"?
Unlike your imaginary example of an "egocentric Christian" who professes to have all the answers, I am just a person, as flawed as any other, who KNOWS beyond shadow of a doubt that I do, indeed, NOT know all the answers. I choose to seek as many answers to my questions in the pages of a Bible. This book does not sugar-coat anything. It tells you unabashedly what is right and what is wrong. You spoke of moral choices. Would you agree that to choose to kill is immoral? And to steal is immoral? And to be jealous of your neighbor is immoral (human...but immoral)? Or choose to cheat on your spouse is immoral?
The Bible does not quibble on these few examples I have cited. The Bible does not quibble at all. It states categorically which are the right choices and which are the wrong choices. I find comfort in a source that does not quibble... Yes, Steve, I find comfort much as a child finds comfort in the correction of his parents. I don't want a source that argues an absolute down to a watery almost unrecognizable issue.
Who knows, Steve....you might find solace in those pages from the book you hate so much. But you have to be open minded enough to give them a try. Alas...you sound as closed minded as you accuse those "egocentric Christians" of being so perhaps you'll never find out. I pray not.....
Shar,
Surprise, AZ
My husband and I, LOVE THIS SHOW. Did I hear right that you are changing to Saturday nights? And do we need to wait till June for more!!!
That is crazy having to wait, you got us hooked and now we need to wait till June, what is up with that. We love NBC, we watch many shows there, but Kings offers such a unique show, none like it on any of the channels. We are so sick like everyone else of Cop shows, Dr. shows and Law shows. This is creative writing, great acting, love all the actors they are good!!! Love the story line.
We need different and this is different and exciting. We love how your not afraid to write something that could be controversal. Keep on writing and acting and we will always watch!! Hurry back to the screens.
Mary,

Come on guys, don't you know its not politically correct to be a Christian? It might as well be illegal. *chuckle*
I think what one gathers from this show is subjective to the individuals train of thought. To call someone who perceives it as being a "Christian" show (because it IS derived from a old testament bible story, after all) just let them. Don't throw a fit and try to prove otherwise. I mean, is it really worth it? You're not going to change what anyone thinks, or how they came to that conclusion so why waste the energy? Why ruffle feathers?
*Jumps off soapbox.*
This show is magnificent. That is all. Have a fabulous day. :)
Doloros(?),
I also am turned off by the believers who are critical of "Kings" because it is not biblical enough, as well as those believers who hope that "Kings" will somehow bring the viewer salvation.
I am in biblical studies; and, because I had written on the Samuel/Saul/David stories, aides for the show's writer contacted me about more good bibliography on that section of the Bible.
I certainly agree with those who have said that "Kings" is NOT a modern re-do of the biblical story, and that the characters are parts of larger archetypes of world literature. But it does so happen that the writers are alluding to the Bible!
"Shiloh," if you'll look in 1 Samuel 1-3, had a shrine where the ark of the covenant was kept. It seems to have been a center for worship; archaeology shows that it suffered a major destruction during the century of the story (perhaps as part of the great Philistine victory over Israel described in ch. 4).
You say "not one biblical allusion." Come on! The name of the tank that David Shepherd destroyed in the first episode was "Goliath!" Check out 1 Samuel 17.
This is the first evening I've logged on and read any comments, and I think that I'm going to weigh in with what disturbs me about the show after I read the rest of the comments and view yesterday's program (that I missed).
Many (most?) parts of the Bible are full of archetypal patterns, so there's no harm in touching on the Bible as a take-off point. Obviously, it's not sticking to the biblical script. The writers decided to make "Jack" a very different (and therefore more interesting, they think) figure than the biblical Jonathan.
That was a strategic decision that I would have opposed. In the story Jonathan is the totally pure character, with David depicted in a very complex way, shiny on the outside, devious on the inside.
We'll see how "Kings" turns out, but I would argue that a very complex David, who sings a "sincere" lament when Jonathan and Saul die (2 Samuel 1) makes him a much more interesting character.
Best wishes,
Jim
Shar,
You only validate my point further on Jewish family. Who cares what caused them to become better family members than Christians, the fact is that their creed allows them to while Christianity influences separation and family dysfunction.
For someone who pretends to admit what she does not know, you make many assumptions, not to mention delusional claims. You assume the bible to be a reference of fact without giving it an equal amount of skepticism that you would give to any other superstition or even to logic or objective reasoning. You are also diluted to say that the bible is straight forward. Yes I have read it, and while you think that God is telling you the "correct" interpretation, it's still a completely different interpretation than the equally naive and emotional Christian reading next to you. Picking and choosing is what the bible is all about, because it's not clear. It's metaphorical in every possible way AT BEST.
Killing, yes that's immoral (though if you are talking about a soldier killing for his country you'd retranslate the Hebrew text without any knowledge of the text or the language to read "murder" huh), and theft is also agreeably immoral. Both of them cause harm, both of them serve little to gain for the perpetrator in the grand scheme of things due to the risks involved. But Jealousy or Envy? What's wrong with them? what exactly makes wanting what other people have immoral? If all you can think of is how the Bible says it's wrong, then I rest my case on this point as well as my point about christians being egocentric.
Go to college and take a course in philosophy some time. The answers to the big questions are not simple. If you think they are, you're doing it wrong.
I really enjoyed this show. What happened to it?
Hey whats up you get us hooked and you say you are going to move it to sat. and than thier is nothen,no show where did it go????????????
I've been patiently waiting for the next episode to show and just found out that the show will return in June. Both my wife and I are hooked and can't wait for the next episode. We see the obvious parallels to the story of David and Saul from the Bible. Why not? It's a classic story with plenty of intrigue and, personally, my favorite story of the Bible. Keep up the good work. I'm glad I'll have something new to watch in June.
I can't believe I have to wait until June! This is the best show in years. Please do not cancel it. It is original and just needs promotion.
Awesome show! CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THE REST OF THE SERIES! I hope the show continues for many seasons.
Congratulations on a wonderful show! Thank you for having the courage to present such a unapologectically Biblical story. And kudos for an absolutely brilliant retooling of the story. This is by far the best show on TV, and you should be proud of it, and commended for it. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for a wonderful show!...oh, wait...
Wait until June? Are you guys freaking idiots?! What's the deal with the wait?
You do know that once you hook an audience, you must reel them in?
Another example (Legend of the Seeker, Harry Potter..etc.) of corporate incompetence!
Take your testosterone pills and just do it already!
June?
Will we be interested in June?
Kings?
Kings, who?
I am so bummed. I miss this show!!!!! At first I thought my DVR was messed up...because we have it set to automatically record so we can watch it later...but it didnt! Then we hear it was moved to saturdays but never saw it! I agree with the last post...DONT CANCEL THE SHOW!!!! KEEP THIS SHOW ON! I have gotten people in my office hooked to this show also! It really is a great show, not many shows left these days that can really hook you off the bat like that.
Great show. I can't wait for June.
This show is a breath of fresh air in prime time television. Amongst all the crime solving, medical dramas, and reality shows, this show actually had a story to tell. A classic story retold in modern times with fresh twists and turns! I think it is brilliant, charming, and passionate. The characters are beautiful people wish good hearts we can get to know and love. The diversity between each one in the life they live, and the secrets they hold is intriguing. I can only hope that this show will stay! It seems all the good shows die and this one deserves to finish it's story all the way to the end! I know it has the potential to do great things! Kudos to all who created this masterpiece! Can't wait for the next season!
I am hooked on Kings. I like it, so does my husband, my hairdresser, and my parents. I am willing to purchase whatever is advertised in the commercials(within reason) to ensure that the series continues. I have told everyone I know how much I enjoy watching. Yesterday someone who reads TV Guide told me that the series is going to resume on Saturday this week. Hopefully the ratings will pick up because Kings will not be competing with March Madness as it was when it premiered.
Mr. Green, good luck with your new show! You have my highest hopes that it comes back in the fall.
So does the show re-start this Saturday 6-13-09?
I was lucky tonight, almost missed the show. Should of done more to remind us.
A renewed story that has been told for thousands of years yet it so relevant today. Will the King and his people get it right? I don't know, but humanity is still struggling with it.
Great show NBC. Can't wait til next week.
DO NOT CANCEL THIS SHOW!
This is an excellent show, so very well written, so very well acted and executed. It's good to have a show to enjoy with intrigue and without violence.
Please DO NOT CANCEL THIS SHOW! You would be doing society a disservice!
I can see why they may not renew this program. I only watched this show a couple of times and was immediately put off by the technique of blatantly pulling references out of the Bible stories about King David. Generally, writers are expected to disguise their archetypes and plotlines, not just lift them whole-hog out of ancient literature, whether considered historical or not. Not exactly original--many writers of fictionalized history have tried the same thing, including myself. Unfortunately, the obvious parallels with the Biblical characters distracts from the supposed 'themes' of the episodes. I found the whole thing disingenuous, amateurish, and sort of boring. I already know these stories. Though the stories remain good stories, this show does them a disservice by taking liberties with them. You can't just copy part of a classic. Casablanca cannot be re-created in a future era with the same characters doing the same things. The show has failed because people could not suspend disbelief. There is a loud clash between the world of fiction and the world of faith, which makes most Americans very uncomfortable. Faith is relegated to Sunday mornings, weddings, and funerals. Though we should explore why, this vehicle certainly failed to do that.
Sex, power, money... the stuff of life and history. Congrats, great fun to watch!
Where did they find such a teriffic cast of actors. Who is the woman that plays the Queen? That woman is going to get an Emmy. She is required to recite lines that are more shakespearian and she makes it sound so believable. The scenes between her and Leslie Bibb helped that young actress really step up her game. I want to learn more about Tomasinna... She has such a strong yet wounded look in her eyes as she protects the family. Another great actress that reverberates with too few lines.
Please, please, please do not cancel this show. It brings alive and deals with issues in todays society in a different medium, and is extremely beneficial to the youth of America. It would be a shame to cancel something so valuable and rare due to the stupidity and rashness of capitalistic television networks who choose to instead air idiotic shows such as the biggest loser and americas got talent...
Seriously, why oh why does NBC need to cancel this show??????? This has become a great show! NBC is really blowing this one.
Please reconsider your decision NBC!!!!
Please don't cancel this show!!!!
PLEASE!!!
One of the best shows ever!!! The writing is superb. I am grateful to watch a show where charcter development is important. I pray that NBC re-thinks their decision to cancel this show.
Beautiful, graceful story telling. I love this beautiful intelligent fantasy. The highlight of my television week. Thank you.
I just watched last nights epsisode on my DVR...and only just learned that NBC has cancelled?!?!?!? WHY oh WHY!! this is the best show ever!! Biblical references aside, as I am no theologist...BEST EVER! I have been captivated since the premiere and can not understand why it must be cancelled. PLEASE find some way to save this brilliant drama!!
I was hoping I heard wrong the show, the BEST show in a long long time,,at least the best show not on cable,,,was cancelled.
C'mon you guys at NBC, you gave "Friends" and "Seinfield" a chance, I heard "ER" was a slow starter.
Give me a break with all this crap you guys pump out, Donald Trump shows, America has talent, (NOT), and on and on..
Yea, "Southlands" ok, but give this show a chance!
Hopefully, one of the cable networks will pick it
up and maybe another "Friday Night Lights" will
happen.
Anyway, great show.
