I loved the show!!!! I was already interested in watching it when I saw the previews. I hope the show keeps going because I think its really good and the acting is really good as well!!! =)

I have found very little information about the "Kings" storyline retelling or at least beginning as a retelling of the Old Testament story of Saul and David. There are far too many parallels to be coincidences. Am I looking in the wrong places?

My husband and I enjoyed the first episode. In stressful times as these are, an age old story told in a fresh new context can be comforting. I hope that you have a sustainable hit on your hands.

Though he is not cast in a leading role, it is good to see Wes Studi placed in a relatively prominent spot. Native Americans in general and Cherokees in apecific are quite proud of his successes and his service.

Good Luck!

Great storytelling, spooky similarities to present times, fun "2nd life" webpages for background, well done.

"Treasury is empty - that's treason!" could just as easily be what we ought be hollering at the top of our lungs to Geitner et al after Bush et al squandered it all in Iraq 'n Afghanistan!

Need a longer list of characters/bios - in Ep 2 who is the captive king who is going mad and who's the secret person he's surprised to find is still alive? As long as viewers are left saying "that's that actor that played so-n-so in such-n-such" we're losing the plot!

Who is playing the General of Gath?

Great show indeed. Ian McShane is just awesome but I have to say what caught my attention from the start was Wes Studi in this series! Wes Studi is one of the greatest character actors of our time. It is so good to see him in this role. Hope to see more dialogue from his character and more camera time. Good for you Wes Studi!

I love the casting of this show. Ian McShane and Wes Studi are a great pair and play off each other so well. Very interesting script and story, would really love to see it develop into a full series. Please keep Kings on NBC.

Great show! I agree with desertdog on Wes Studi as General Abner being the King's right-hand man. I also would like to see more of Wes Studi's character more fully developed with more dialogue and scenes. Mr. Studi is a great actor and I always watch his movies on APTN here in Canada. Ditto on keeping Kings on NBC.

Am truly absorbed with the show from start to finish. It's so good I wish it was on for 2 hours each episode instead of one. Kudos for bringing the story in to "today". Keep Kings on NBC.

By Lu | March 24, 2009 11:12 AM | Reply

Yes, NBC's "Kings" is a modern-day rendition of the Old Testament story about King Saul and the rise of David. Most of the names of the characters and places come from the original Hebrew story, such as Gath, Gilboa, David, Michelle, and so on and so forth. Notice that like the Biblical David, David shepherd has 6 other brothers as well. The point of "Kings" is to re-tell the original story using a contemporary setting, preserving timeless issues (conflict within the king's court, conflict between two neighboring states, conflict between church and state, etc.) and character traits (heroism, leadership, corruption, divine-right monarchy).

Kings is a great show, I was hooked from the first episode! The casting is great, the story line is better, just saw the second episode, and am even more hooked. I was thinking though, in the biblical story Johnathon and David are the closest of friends, and yet Jack almost hates david?

By Brian | March 25, 2009 1:28 PM | Reply

I REALLY like this show, great dialogue and a wonderful cast. It is SO NICE to see the great WES STUDI in a weekly series. He is such an awesome actor as all of his past roles indicate. I wonder why Hollywood doesn't take more notice? He will never let you down, even when his screen time and dialogue are limited, he adds so much to the show just with his presence.

Anyway love the show can't wait t'ill sunday . (this it my first time righting about a show...meaning I want it to succeed) From Canada , good luck guys

This show is great, the adaptation of the story to the modern days is a great Idea, David is the type of leader that has love for life to the point of self sacrife. I have great hopes for this show.

Brilliant! For those like myself that grew up memorizing those stories of old, its exciting to see the story told in a manner that does not crush your childhood imagination, teasing your interest by its creative and modern approach. Kudos!

I have missed every episode of this but have been lucky enough to watch it online. This show is SUPERB! It is my new addiction.

The cast is wonderful. The acting is tremendous! The writing is magnificent. The setting/set decoration and costumes are splendid. What more can you ask for?? This show is A HIT!

Thank goodness for some GREAT TV .... finally! It has been awhile since anything has been as truly enjoyable to watch as this!

Maybe it won't get cancelled. No network gives a drama a fair shake these days but of all the networks NBC is at least the best at giving dramas a fair shake. I mean, look, they are standing behind 'Life' when people said the same thing about the ratings and gave it a chance to build a clientele and it's a great show, too. I'm just grateful that NBC is willing to produce a drama and not another talk show or reality show. For that alone I'll give them my viewership but if they decide to start pulling an ABC and cancelling the dramas I'll start cancelling them.

It would be helpful to have some historical background to explain the alternative reality world in which "Kings" takes place. It is obviously a world with a very different history than our reality, yet there are references to things that come from our reality, such as the great classical music of Beethovan. It is encouraging that NBC would bring what had been a theme from the genre of science fiction into popular TV.

What is with Prince Jack? It seems that this character could use a make over.

What about a reflection of childhood and the impact of the father/King, son/Prince relationship?

What about an early fling that resulted in a out f wed lock child? a secret past murder? a twin?

This Prince character needs a make over in my etimation. It could border on a Tudor type character with heavy bi tendencies. He could give us the heavy, dark (devil) extreme of the show compared to angelic "David." Boring.

What a pleasure. In each episode i am seeing a Shakespearean play...The plot is wonderful as is the acting. I am a linguist and i love the language. Everything about this show is fantastic...the bibical references, again, the language, the characters, the multiple plot lines. I hope this show is a success. I realize that this might not appeal to the wider TV audiences but there certainly is a niche for 'Kings'....thank you to the network, for taking the risk.

By Diane | March 31, 2009 8:17 AM | Reply

wow...everyone is gushing over this show.

dont get me wrong...im enjoying watching it (spent the whole night watching the entire thing on hulu).

first the good:

obviously its a compelling story that we all kind of know already. the show is doing a good job developing the plot and fleshing out the characters. visually its pretty good, nice sense of scale.

now the not so good:

a tv show is entirely dependent on decent writting. although the plot is being spun out very nicely...the real important stuff...the dialoge is atrocious. its shallow...predictable, and inconsistent in its style. either have them speak like its a shakespearean tragedy..or have them speak in normal modern ways...or at least have the 2 styles seperated and used differently. the show has them bouncing back and forth in the middle of a line.

the actors may be very good...but the words they are forced to say is really bringing them down. i especially am annoyed with ian mcshanes poor mans al pacino look and sound. again...not really his fault, the writing and directing is to blame.

i do over all like the show...and i hope the writing matures a bit...its really dragging it down.

By ouroboros | March 31, 2009 12:02 PM | Reply

aaahhh! Who are you!!! Mr. Critic. The writing is superb.. Are you so caught up into Gossip Girl, Reality TV, 90210 that you don't know a good show or good writing when you hear it. This show is for mature audience not the 90210 viewers.
Thanks but give me a break. This is an awesome show on network tv what other show like this is out there except for lost or 24.

The only other show like it that captured my interest and others to the point that their protests caused another network to continue the show was Jericho. It too was an apocalyptic future scenario. It's conclusion could have been the beginning of a disastrous East/West American Civil War II. See comment under "Commenting is fixed".

Keep the show running. You could go on through David, Solomon and all the good and bad Kings that followed.

I agree with most everyone here...Kings is wonderful...and most interesting if you are familiar with the biblical account of David, Saul, Jonathan, etc. But I too wonder about the relationship between David and Jack...that is, so far, the one thing that really stands out as being inconsistent with the actual account... unless the writers are going to bring them into a friendship in the future. I look forward to seeing where this story line is going.

Finally! A quality show that is worth waiting for. NBC, give this show the chance to develop. Between shows like Battlestar Galactica, House and now Kings, it's good to see there is reason to watch television again.

Looking forward to tonight's show, Judgement Day. I wonder what kind of Draconian justice King Silas will metes out. He already in "Insurrection" has mentioned hanging a butler who spilled coffee on him (shades of Pharaoh's butler in the Joseph story).

Keep the show going NBC and please give it more deserved publicity. Yesterday evening on the evening news (in Phoenix, AZ) there was plenty of preview promotion on Apprentice 2 with Donald Trump (which i despise) but not a word about KINGS.

I hear it is also being currently broadcast on the Sci Fi channel.

It looks like the show has been cancelled. The website says new shows are coming in June, but I heard a news clip on the radio that NBC did not have room in it's lineup for Kings. Maybe the new shows are going to be broadcast on SciFi. It's sad that a really good show that could develop into an historic one is being cancelled. Networks don't give shows a chance anymore. Maybe they will put the rest of the episodes online, at least!

I love the fact that it retells the story of Saul and David with a modern twist. The sets are impressive, the costumes are perfect, and the lines are phenomenal! An all around captivating show!
After all the confusion with the show times I hope it will survive. I hope to see many seasons in the future.
Can't wait 'til June when it will air again!

This show was is breath of fresh air in prime time television. Amongst all the crime solving, medical dramas, and reality shows, this show actually had a story to tell. A classic story retold in modern times with fresh twists and turns! I thought it was brilliant, charming, and passionate. The cast is full of new beautiful people who's personalities sparkle. Who's diverse lives and secrets are absolutely intriguing! I can only hope that this show has a chance to tell it's story all the way to the end! It seems all the great shows die these days. I finally found this show after you moved it to Saturdays and totally confused us all. I hear rumors that Kings is to be cancelled. Please keep this show on the air. Everybody I talk to is talking about this show - "Have you seen it? It's incredable. Wait, did it get canceled?" Please promote this show and keep it on the air. It keeps me coming back, and I'm usually the type of person who only watches BBC and therefore doesn't have any common ground at cocktail parties. You have a winner, don't blow it.

I have brought my love for this show to everyone and any site that I can. Just like a man who does anything for the woman he loves so that he may watch her gracefully everyday, I can not see Kings not being in my life, nor can I get enough of it! Obviously I am inspired by it.

I can say honestly that It sucks me in so deep, that I can suspend fiction and almost feel that I am at home watching my leaders private thoughts, they're lives as they unravel in my living room, even if I open my front door the streets would be just as they are in Shiloh. Its been a long time since any media of any form made me feel this way. What an escape!

I cannot get enough of this show, and it would be a shame if anything happened to it. I would not allow money to become an objective because the show-when the story is told in full and there can longer be anymore added to it cause the story would be told, this show will be a masterpiece. I see it bigger when its over than when it began. But I, I'v been with it from the start!

It must be something to be a part of it. I personally would do anything to help write for it and watch the story come to life. What an exciting experience it must be to be apart of KINGS! I am inspired to begin my dream of writing again and this show is part of that dream, thank you.

ahhhhh! Un-cancel! lol This show is amazing! Since I first stumbled onto it in the Playstation store I can't get enough! Every Saturday all activity at my house stops just to watch Kings.

It brings us to the edge of our seats and makes our jaws drop at commercial breaks over and over again.
This is insane! Is anything with this kind of depth doomed to be canceled! Rome after 2 seasons, and Kings after just 1?! All I'll have left after this is True Blood...

My first and only reason to ever tune in to NBC is out the window this Saturday. I hope all those actors and writers and the like can move on to something that's worthy of their talents.

Just one more reason not to watch NBC. Morons at NBC did not even look at ratings during run of series. Instead, close their eyes to what the audience enjoyed. Go ahead, cancel Merlin, and we won't have to turn NBC on at all. You finally put something on your network that was enjoyed, and left crap on there that isn't even worth turning on your channel. Shame on YOU nbc.

Hi KINGStoogood4NBC. I agree, but your finger got stuck on the send button. :)

To MIchael Green and cast:

Again thanks for a great show. To all the comments thanks also for inspiration that there are still intelligent viewers out there.

The only show before Kings that I followed was Jericho, both seasons. (Although my wife and I followed ER the last of the tradition of good shows like St. Elsewhere, Hill St. Blues. Kingdom Hospital, etc.in the "good old days") It was another post-apocalyptic plot.

Jericho, after a more or less organized via internet effort, was continued for another season. Inspired by the comment “nuts” by one of the lead characters all the unhappy viewers flooded the network offices with nuts of all descriptions. I don’t recommend flooding NBC with butterflies though unless they are replicas. It came to a satisfying conclusion.

The sequel could have been "American Civil War II" between East and West. I wrote an imaginary scenario of the cataclysmic events that followed which could have culminated in a future Kingdom of Gilboa. (It’s buried somewhere in comments and forum around April 1 of this yearJ) BTW: The convoluted nature of the different forums did not help the show. I would have liked something more KISS.

As far as much TV being crap, I agree. Reality (unreality really) shows are the worst. I call some of them “young thugs in training”; God! and they may be running this country someday.

I am surprised that nobody seems to have commented that the dramatic offerings on PBS both domestic and TV do provide quality drama and documentaries. They aren’t all BBC reruns; many are new series. Perhaps KINGS could go on there.

If you want political intrigue and discussion try CSPAN. The politicos in DC sometimes put on a good show (no uniformed guy with Glock at the ready in case of dissent though). I don’t have all the cable channels so I don’t know what is on Sci Fi, History, A&E, etc.

If for no other reason than missing out on the sound during preparation for the coronation of “King Jack”, I will look for the DVD when it is released.

Again thanks.

Final note: When you comment to this page, I suggest you do it on a word processor first, then cut and past. Typing directly in here is incredibly slow (and I have a high speed connection). Also copy your comment. Sometimes your submit will be lost.
