Thank you and Good Night

A note from Kings creator, Michael Green

To the fantastic fans of Kings --

The incredible response to Kings on Hulu, iTunes and other alternative outlets has been outstanding and humbling. The airing of our final episode seemed the right occasion to thank those who have come to check us out, and to answer some of the questions/guesses/misconceptions prevalent on the message boards.

In no particular order:

-- Yes, the show is canceled. Definitively. Has been for some time. The sets taken down, the writers and actors have all disbanded and moved on. I'm told CBS's promising new series, "The Good Wife," has taken over our old offices.

-- Kings was originally picked up for 13 hours of content, 12 episodes with the two-hour pilot. It was not a mini-series, but a full series with a full series' ambitions to last for much longer.

-- The show had completed its filming entirely before the airing of the pilot. No creative choices were made to the scripts based on ratings. We crafted the season to be a full "chapter" in the book of David and Silas's lives, to make it the best possible season we could, sparing nothing. After our disappointing premiere, some editing choices were made to the finale to eliminate a few moments that created more intrigue that we would not be able to pursue. Some of those scenes will be put on the DVD, scheduled for release this September.

-- To those who thought Saturday nights was a terrible time slot, you are correct. That move was the first step of cancellation. Once that decision was made, no attempts would be made to "save" or promote the show in any way. It was already over then.

-- The reasons for its cancellation were nothing more than the low ratings.

-- Some have speculated that the cost of the show was prohibitive. While it is true that the episode budget was high for a first season show, that number was reduced by the outstanding aggregate 30% tax benefit New York provided (which we all hope will remain in effect), thus bringing the cost down to rates comparable to other prime time dramas. And, of course, plans were already made to bring the costs down to whatever number the studio required of us in the future.

-- The network had no negative reaction at any stage to religious content within the show. In fact, they encouraged it and found it hopeful.

-- It was only when time came to market the show that a decision was made not to promote the show as a biblically inspired tale. Fear of reprisal from the religious audience was the described cause. Something NBC has had bad experiences with before. As such, any references to "King David" were actively avoided, in favor of the limited marketing campaign that many of you saw and have commented on with derision.

-- Some of that promotion gave the misleading impression that the nation of Gilboa was somehow tied to American history. This was never part of the show's premise or execution in any way.

-- There was no "religious agenda" among the writers. The writing staff was deliberately comprised of a diverse group of geniuses. Including believers and non-believers, lapsed and actives, people who are atheist, Jewish, Christian, Muslim. All had done their homework. All their perspectives were invaluable.

-- Most religious viewers actually quite liked the show. Understanding that our creative task was not transcription.

* * * *

This has already gotten to be a much longer note than I intended. I suppose I'm indulging myself because it is difficult to say goodbye to the people -- real and imagined -- I came to love in making Kings. But it's time.

The outcome of Kings was heartbreaking to all of us who worked so hard and had such a wonderful time making it. Every moment on screen represents stories, conversations, arguments, decisions by dozens -- hundreds -- of blazingly talented, always impassioned people.

It was a difficult show to make. We had to fight for every choice, so we thought each one through.

Many involved with the show felt wronged by our network, or at least scuttled. I personally don't feel I have enough information to know precisely what led to our failure to achieve ratings success -- though I believe that had the show been given a better launch, the outcome would have been something to celebrate.

Your interest in show here is, to me, evidence enough of this. (As an interesting aside, Kings was #1 on iTunes on the day we were cancelled.)

Even if it is tempting to trash NBC, we do owe them gratitude. Writing, acting, filming is about the work, not the reward, and NBC allowed us to make the best possible show we could. They let us film in New York. They let us assemble a cast without equal on the network landscape. A group of actors who came ready every day to spin the broken-meter mouthfuls we wrote for them into song. Ian McShane, Chris Egan, Susanna Thompson, Sebastian Stan, Allison Miller, Dylan Baker, Eamonn Walker, Marlyne Afflack, Becky Ann Baker... Every one of them suffered long hours, cold nights, and still came prepared, passionate, elevating every piece of material put to them. They made us look better than we deserve.

On our first day of working together I told my writing staff that we'd been outfitted with a set of golden Legos, and it falls to us to build. They sat down and built a whole country... with an eye on building a world.

Creatively, we worked closely and well and without controversy with our network and studio, through several regimes.

We had the privilege of working with our biggest fan of all, the incomparably warm, kind, thoughtful, and missed Nora O'Brien.

The fans we have are the greatest I've ever seen, willing to play along with our most arcane of games and follow our meagerest breadcrumb trail.

We thank you all for your time, and hope we honored your attention.

Last thing:
Some have asked, what can they do to "Save the show." We are, sadly, well past that point.

If there is anything to do at all, it's to find your voice and let the networks know that if they covet your attention at all -- and yes yes yes they do -- they can have it by programming and standing by shows with substance.

Write a letter. Mail it to any network. Stick a butterfly on the envelope if you'd like.

We'd be honored.

If only it were possible for another network to pick you up. I will be buying the DVD and I've been following the show on Hulu since I heard about it. I will truly miss the great story you guys have woven and am very grateful you had a chance to share what you did. I wish you all the best and am still (possibly foolishly) hoping someone will step in and pick it up. ;)

An excellent post Mr. Michael Green and I would like to commend you and the entire cast and crew for an incredible job well done. Kings has been one of the smartest, most beautiful, most exciting shows to come along in a very long time and it is very much appreciated by millions of fans.

It really is a shame that we won't get to see more, but the 13 hours we did see was excellent television that many will be hard-pressed to match.

Our best wishes to you and everyone involved with the show. You've all done an amazing job.

The show was amazing for as long as it lasted, and I do wish there was a way to save it. I do hope you will continue to sell the shirts and other memorabilia so that the devoted fans you made of us can buy them. I'll be sure to buy a DvD even though I've seen the show. Keep making amazing television and hopefully one day something like Kings will stick.

Thank you for the lengthy goodbye, and the show for as long as it lasted.

Great television is something that is truly unique to each individual. When I experience other television stations, I witness the same phenomenon: police dramas, medical dramas, and reality television. While these are interesting subjects, Kings is unique because it was retelling one of the greatest stories ever known with excellent writing and casting.

I believe that the plot of Kings only thickened as the show progressed and to leave Kings as it did in the last episode would be very difficult for fans. I know countless people through simply watching the last few episodes were inquiring as to how they could view the entire season.

Kings is not another police or medical drama. Nor is it a reality show with individuals interested in gaining wealth and recognition or a view into the lives of the wealthy. The usual subjects found in other television programs are not central to Kings and are instead replaced by a simple story of a person who battles through insurmountable adversity to achieve greatness, love, and something that I have not seen in television for quite some time: a person who will put themselves in harm’s way to not only help others, but do the right thing.

Finally, I ask that you consider the impact of Kings. For the first time since I can remember, I watched a television show that made myself feel great afterwards. Whether it’s a time of hardship economically, politically, or even the rigors of everyday life, Kings is truly uplifting. The story of an ordinary person rising to the occasion and standing firm in the face of adversity not for his own gratification, but for others is something that everyone would like to see. Kings delivers this in a new way.

Every week it was truly magnificent to see David come back one more time ready to fight for love and those around him. A television show that that inspires the audience with a character of such qualities is rare; I am hard pressed to find a show like Kings.

Mr Green, It has been a long time since any television show was able to capture me as well as Kings did, network or otherwise. I commend you and your excellent choice of cast on what was easily the most understated, and by far the best piece of television on this season. Thank you for the letter, it is great to know that just the executives wrote the show off long ago, and not the creator. I hope to see more of your work in the future.

Mr. Green,

I apologize, but I have never written something online before. I wrote the long letter above and was hoping you could forward it to NBC. I’m afraid I have been unable to find an email to send it to.

I really appreciated Kings and was impressed that you took the time to make a television show that is truly inspiring.

Thank you for making the first television show that I have actually watched all the way through. Kings was truly the best television show I have ever witnessed.

Well done.

Living in Denmark, (a kingdom), I found this series one of the most entertaining and interesting series of all time. The acting of McShane was like watching a hurricane.

I am sad to see that the show has ended, and I hope someone will see the light and make way for a second season.

Thanks to all crew members for making such an excellent piece of work.

It was highly appreciated.

Mr. Green,

Thank you the cast and crew for such passionate work. Work which completely transended my non-HDTV and super slick network line-ups.

Your program needed none of those bells and whistles because it was quality work. Period.

When I think about all of the programs NBC kept and uses as mid-season replacements and all I can see is a lack of originality. Re-hash and re-treads of shows that have made it on other networks or cable. Sadly, it leaves me scratching my head.

You are correct - the launch of the show was probably lacking. Each day I saw the posters for the show on my train to and from work. I *May* have seen one promo - and it didn't look like anything I'd be interested in. War? Butterflies? Was this to be another Harry Potter?

Then by accident, I thought I had programmed my recorder to tape another show, and taped Kings.

Instead of fast-forwarding through it, I figured- I'd check out the first few minutes.

Well...when I caught on to the "David" and "Goliath" references- I was hooked. The characters only piqued my interest further.

After two episodes, I began to tell people at my church and my priest whose favorite Biblican story is The Story of David. He was enthused about catching the show and so happy that someone finally decided to shine some light on such an amazing story.

Then the move to Saturday-without warning or notice- the mystique was somehow diluted. When I found it again, news of teh cancellation had been broken, and it was futle to try and bring on more fans. Build them up only to let them down?

I recorded the last episode and plan to watch sometime this week..bittersweet,yes but highly anticipated too.

Thank you for Kings, thank you for providing a real joy from television again --- and think about writing a series of books, that way those of use who have become such fans of your characters will get to experience them further.

Gosh, look at what vampires have done for "Twilight"!

Best Regards,

KM

I know I'd buy it just to find out what happens to David and maybe his yet to be born son...
I'm sure a lot of people would buy the book...
heres hoping..

What if, now this is a big if another network did pick this show up or even possibly Hulu found sponsors to sponsor the show just for Hulu? Will the whole team be assembled again to create more episodes? All we have to do is write on message boards and send e-mails and letter to CEO of different networks and Hulu. Could it be possible to bring it all back cause no mistake if it was marketed better this show would have been a hit and still has the possibility to be a hit. I am not saying i want this show to be the next Jericho, but more of a Family Guy as in getting cancled but brought back and kept. I think ABC would be willing to pick it up, but who knows. This show still has great potential. So start sending letters, e-mails and posting on message boards, get the word out there that Kings does have a following and it is a strong following. We are proof of that following, we want our show back.

If you can't bash NBC, please allow me to do it for you.

The American public is, for the most part, a collective of morons who will accept whatever drek is thrown into their trough - or so networks like NBC would believe.

Night in and night out, terrible shows featuring sycophants and idiots fly from satellites to homes all across the nation making the viewers who watch them dumber than they were an hour ago.

Then, like a ray from fucking heaven, a show like Kings appears and elevates the viewer in both mind and spirit.

Of course, NBC can't have that. Real substance instead of hollow style? NEVER!

NBC, screw you. I might even take a liking to start writing to your advertisers telling them how I won't buy their products since they are affiliated with a company that refuses to reward quality and therefore likely make crap themselves.

If that doesn't work, next time I'm in New York, I'll just stop by to give Mr. Silverman the finger.

Mr. Green,

Thank you and thanks to all the cast and crew for such great work! The entire ensemble was great, and Ian McShane is a force to be reckoned with.

I am truly saddened to see the show go, and it's a shame that networks like NBC do not take into account viewership on iTunes or Hulu. With new media and people becoming more busy on weekday evenings, it stands to reason that TV timeslot viewership is inevitably going to be only a percentage of the total viewership.

I wish that the show would be picked up by another network. Would you an any of the writers consider turning what you had planned for the next few seasons into books or graphic novels? I would definitely buy those if they came to fruition.

Thanks again!

A warm thank-you to you, the writing staff, and the cast for creating such a wonderful experience. It was always a great experience every week tuning in to Kings. I really enjoyed watching how the plot played out and the skilled combination of both the writers and the cast of actors.

Also, thanks for taking the time to write us this little note to clear up a few matters.

I'm so disappointed that such a quality show couldn't find the audience it so richly deserved. I was intrigued by the concept and hooked from the very first episode. An interesting premise, fantastic writing and amazing actors...what more do you need?

I will definitely pick this up on dvd to enjoy all over again.

By Evan Cantrell | July 27, 2009 8:37 AM | Reply

Mr. Green:

I understand that the sets are gone, the actors have moved on, etc. I also understand you want to move onward and upward to new things.

However, if the fan response demands it, and you gave us a method or reason to centralize it, I don't see why we couldn't put forth the effort to contact NBC and have them provide us with some form of wrap-up. Either a single episode or a TV movie wouldn't be impossible; Jericho got a lower budget 7-episode order from CBS for a second season that nobody thought would ever happen. Firefly got a feature film. Both had their sets struck and actors move on in the meantime.

According to NBC, Kings may not have the longevity we fans would want, but I would be astounded if there wasn't enough fan demand for a single piece of closure if only you'd rally the troops. David did take down that Goliath, after all.

By MG | July 27, 2009 8:41 AM | Reply

Dan, the show is not set in a ridiculously drawn out and boring tongue like the bible, it has a very different spin on it.

So I agree with Lorys. If you cannot continue to give us a show. Why not give us a book? Kings: The Book of David Perhaps? I know that people would take the time to read it. And I hope that you will consider it. Many people have been touched by this story, and we all beg you to continue it one way or another

Thanks for creating an epic piece for us.

Each episode was crafted expertly and presented with excellence. I'll miss Kings on the level that I miss West Wing. (Which means it will be purchased on DVD and watched regularly.)

It is too bad the media companies are going for an unsustainable bottom line over producing and maintaining quality shows. Lasting art is more than money and ratings. Everyone associated with Kings should be proud of their part in this wonderful piece.

My family and I were glued to the television for every single episode of this magnificent series. Fortunately, I had set my DVR to "record new issues", so it found the Saturday shows for us.
Magnificent acting, sets, characters, plot! Thank you so much for your creative vision - we just loved it. We were originally attracted to the show because of Ian McShane, an incredibly talented actor, but we stayed because it was a superb show. Bravo!

What an amazing show, and I'm thankful NBC played it through to the end of the season.

Kings was different than most Primetime series, and if the network could have stood by it a bit longer, and ran it on proper nights, it might have stood a chance. That I will have to leave to the experts who have more experience with these things.

My compliments to the entire crew and actors who did an amazing job. Another great show who's timing was just not there yet. It's difficult to begin to follow a series, only to have it pulled out from under you. I really have to think twice about getting involved in new series, as to whether or not it will still be there after I'm hooked.

Thank you and good luck to you in future projects.

I do not watch scheduled television anymore as the networks have done away with most of the interesting story lines. I do, however, try to check out shows on Hulu from time to time. A few weeks ago I watched the Kings pilot and was hooked. I wish I would have caught this sooner. It is a shame that the writers, actors and director, as well as everyone else involved, have lost this amazing story because the network failed them (not the other way around).

This is the reason there is nothing on our over saturated network television. This is the reason cable is failing, the great shows are over looked, the amazing stories are ignored. The amazing writing of Kings fell on deaf ears.

In short: NBC fail!

Hopefully, the king will return in another fashion.

It's a breath of fresh air amid so many other shows that are copy-cat of one another. Please, please, bring it back! Another network would be smart to pick it up, market it correctly, and put it in a better time slot. They would have a hit! Thank you Kings for your quality show!

1. Can you tell us what would have happened in season 2 and wrap up everything that was not in the finale such as what Andrew did to get exiled? What will happen to David? and ect?

2. What will be on the DVD?

3. Is there any chance of a pickup on another network? CBS picked up Medium!

If we comment, you know we care.

This story, in it's purest and best form, IS in the bible. Nothing could be better.

But for us, still a TV generation, we enjoy watching the writers, actors, and producers do their beautiful dance in an effort to entertain us. We knew there were secular points, but we willingly overlooked them for the awesome job you all did. This was not a show only. It was an experience. One that I anticipated like no other. Magical.

I will stop short of prayer, but still am hopeful. What a jubilation if only....

I was sad to see Kings "end". But, now, I'm waiting for 2011 when "Gilboa" hits theaters. Once the Butterfly movement gets to full steam and Universal decides to give the fans a big screen resolution to the open ended story. And the comics that follow will be a great vehicle to continue the story.

C'mon - if Whedon's fans can make it happen, so can we! Trade in your browncoat for a Buttefly emblazoned one and start your letter campaign. I mean, we at least have Ian McShane's Silas to work with - far more compelling than Malcolm Reynolds as a lead (no offense to Nathan Fillion).

Michael,

Thank you for such an amazing show! And thank you for taking the time to write your fans. Since I first saw the show, I have been anxious and hopeful about the future of it. My husband and I started watching "Kings" on Hulu when we saw it rated as one of the most popular shows. We'd never heard of it before (though, admittedly, we don't have broadcast television, which certainly doesn't stop us from seeing ads for shows), and we were blown away by the quality of the pilot and the lack of promotion for such an amazing program. The discussion boards were full of fans dismayed by the cancellation, and I joined their ranks. I'm heartbroken to know that I've seen the last of the show, but I remain hopeful that some miracle will take place.

My husband is ready to boycott NBC Universal, which means no more Hulu and many other things. They should be ashamed of themselves for failing to support such a fine show and failing to meet the desires of the viewership. "Kings" is certainly one of the best programs to air ever—and certainly in this era of cookie-cutter bores and reality nonsense.

Thanks for creating a show with phenomenal writing, outstanding acting, and truly superb decision-making all around. The directing, the sets, the editing...everything was great. "Kings" had a fantastic team, and I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.

Mr Green,

I always feel sad when "minute 59" is upon me while watching Kings.
It is truly one of the best shows I have seen in a long time. If nothing else, please know how happy you made so many..however short-lived. I'm not one for giving up easily...These days, we all need a thoughtful escape from reality, so I will continue to fight to get the show back...somewhere.
Well done sir!

I only remember seeing an advertisement for this show once, and it didn't impress me that much. However, I just completed watching the series on Hulu and really enjoyed it. I found the interpretation of David's story into modern themes to be seriously thoughtful. I suggested the show to a few other friends and their response has been positive too. I am sad to see the show cancelled, but I am glad the attempt was made, and hopeful that a future similar show can be produced. I suppose I'll have to put this on the shelf next to Firefly for series that ended before their time.

A brilliant show! Well-written, superbly acted and poorly publicized. Engaging, original, sincere... how many more adjectives can I come up with to convey how sad & disappointed I am at this loss?!!! Few shows these days can compare.

I think that I am in Hell; literally... Every great I love is canceled! And each time the show that is canceled was a huge success!

Kings was a great show, and reminded me so much of HBO's Rome. Rome was a show that everyone watched, and for no apparent reason was ended abruptly. Everyone I knew watched Rome, and even random strangers that would over hear our conversations mentioning Rome would comment that they, too, loved Rome.

The same can be said about Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and Stargate: Atlantis.

I realize not all of the shows I am mentioning are NBC network shows, but they are great shows that were highly popular, much talked about, and left viewers wanting more. So much more, that each show had a huge petition.

Kings now joins this group of great shows that died before their prime.

I don't know what is going on, how ratings are now tracked, or how these decisions to cancel are made. However, I do believe something is wrong, and not working properly with how they receive statistics.

There is no way these shows should have been canceled, and maybe these executives should get out on the streets to see for themselves just how popular these shows have been. They're putting too much faith into something is faulty.

And maybe they should do a little more advertising also!

Basically, the number one reason I can think of for so many new shows being canceled..."Money Grab."

Make a new show, get the fast cash from a first or second season, then dump it before they have to renegotiate the actors contracts for higher wages while risking a possible ratings fall in the 3rd+ seasons.

Never Say never if the DVD sales do well enough maybe some network will be smart like Fox (family guy) and bring it back. On a personal note to networks hard to follow a show when you space out airing of new episodes, NBC is by far the worst I don't even watch them anymore, . Great season, great show lets hope there are more!!!!!

This was an amazing show with a stunning cast. The writing was absolutely fabulous, I was surprised it was a show on NBC and not on HBO or Showtime. This post has made me really sad... now I now it is officially canceled and there is no chance of its revival. That Saturday slot was ridiculous...

I was looking to find when the next season would begin. I'm depressed to find I'll never get to see it again. How can they do such things?

By Lewis | July 27, 2009 8:09 PM | Reply

Wow, I came to find when the next episode would air and found that it had been canceled. How disapointing. NBC continues to disapoint. This was a truely great show with a gifted cast. I agree with others that wonder if another network would pick up the show, I would be truely greatful. I believe the main reason for the poor ratings was the promotion and the time slot. And NBC has dramas that do well with ratings, so the problem was not the ability to promote the show, it was the lack of effort. A shame for those of us who enjoyed the show and its wonderful cast.

By Katie | July 27, 2009 9:05 PM | Reply

I curse NBC with a lifetime of sores in unpleasant places!

They need to understand that in this day and age, Neilsen ratings mean absolutely nothing. I know not one single person who even has a Neilsen box.

Television viewership is truly garnered and measured online now because most of the viewing audience doesn't have time to watch TV the way they used to. There are DVR's and Tivo's selling by the thousands for a reason.

Kings fan communities are EVERYWHERE and NBC never took the time to gauge what the true viewership for Kings was. They couldn't have seen all the fanfare online and STILL thought this show wasn't popular.

It's my ferverent hope that Kings is picked up by another network, one with more balls than the Nothing But Crap network.

May NBC sputter out and die for this.

By Nancy | July 27, 2009 9:06 PM | Reply

It was a beautiful, brilliant piece of work. The production, the acting, the story...amazing. Maybe the tale of Kings has ended with NBC, but perhaps another network may pick up where you and your team have left off?

Complete travesty. Ian McShane is sheer poetry to watch. Who the hell cancels a show with him as the lead? Seriously Zucker is possibly THE stupidest person on the planet. The whole cast was amazing. The writing/storytelling was unparalleled on t.v.

However I did twitter that the editing in the finale was jacked up and at least now I know why.

EPIC FAIL NBC!!!! Don't compound your eff-up with another version of "Law & Order" please!

Thanks for this letter it nice to know the scoop.

Mr. Green:

My thanks to you and your entire cast and crew for giving us "Kings." I was hooked within the first 15 minutes of the show, I was captivated with the story through the last minute of episode 13, and I could not be sadder that it was cancelled by NBC. I will miss the show tremendously.

Thank you for taking the time to write and share your thoughts with us.

I look forward to your next project.

Thank you again for a wonderful television event.

WONDERFUL - was the word I used to describe the CEREBRAL and RICH series, KINGS. Perhaps the network should not have compromised the biblical foundation of the story-line, especially as it lead up to Passover and Easter. Michael Green and the KINGS team deserve kudos. The series deserves a new network patron (HBO? SyFy? TBN?)
Ian, Chris - great work! Look for scripts like this series offered. Thank you, all!

NBC has failed. That's for sure.

Don't do them the honor of making one more dollar off of this show, since they have already deemed us worthless as exemplified by its cancellation. Do not download it from anywhere that requires payment and restrict NBC on your cable box by using the parental features, that way you won't even have to see it when you're surfing.

There are other places you can get/watch the show, if you do a little research.

Just keep writing letters to other networks that aren't run by imbeciles, if you can find one. In particular, I think HBO would be a very good target for emails and letters. We know they would make sure the budget was right, the advertising was right, and the time slot was right.

In a time when garbage like American Idol and John and Kate Plus 8 permeates our society like the rotting corpse of justified and public gossip that it is, it was refreshing to see a show that not only required thought to make, but requires thought to WATCH. You can't sit on your couch, drooling on yourself, your brain half-tuned and your eyes glazed when Kings is on. There are actual motives to actions; real and lasting consequences to decisions; and, miracle of miracles, REALITY AND DEPTH TO CHARACTERS.

This show must keep going for reasons that are bigger than itself. I'm reminded of Network when Howard Beale laments, "you dress like the tube, you eat like the tube, you raise your children like the tube, you even think like the tube. This is mass madness, you maniacs. In God's name, you people are the real thing, WE are the illusion."

That is why this show needs to be made. It inspires thought outside of itself. It inspires consideration into the human condition. It isn't just an hour to sell cars or body lotion or whatever other garbage they decided to peddle.

This show needs to be made, and the people who benefit from it need to fight to make sure that happens. I include not only the viewership, but also the actors, actresses, producers, directors and writers. You came up with and created something special. We watched and were inspired to believe in something special.

To give up on the American public so easily is a sin. That's all I've got for now.

Mr. Green,
Thank you for your insightful letter to clear things up regarding this show. So many people have been feeling up and down about whether the show was going to be canceled. It fueled us all to not only ensure that we watched it but to tell all the friends and family we could reach out to, to watch the show as well. This show had everything..... hope, treachery, honor, courage, faith, excitement, passion, disgust, fear, apprehension, happiness, and so much more!

Thank you so much for bringing such a fantastic and inspiring show. It has everything you would want in a show and brought out every emotion of its viewers. I admit to being obsessed from the very first episode. I really hadn't seen any advertising for Kings and did not know what the story was based on but found myself thoroughly enjoying everything about it. I don't think the story behind Kings should matter at all. It is a story in this world and it isn't wrong or weird to tell it... especially the way you, the writers and actors were telling it! I realize we live in an age where everyone is politically correct but the show is great on its on merit. Full stop!

I truly hope that another network picks this show up because they would do well in having Kings on their roster and so would I. I don't even have HBO because I have a basic cable package but if Kings were to be picked up by HBO, I will be purchasing HBO to watch it.

Very good job Mr. Green. Your work continues to be outstanding. And truly the best of wishes to you and EVERYONE involved with the creation of this show. You've all done an incredible job and I sincerely hope that Kings Lives On, Long Live the Kings show!

I can't express how much I love Kings. It was the first ever telelvision series that I watched from it's premiere until the season finale, although I had to record it because of the horrible Saturday night time slot.

It's not fair that a great show like this was cancelled in favor of putting out another season of Fattest Loser, but I am appreciative of what I did get to watch. I don't blame NBC for cancelling one bit, because they're obviously not a charity looking to give away money, but it's obvious they didn't do a great job marketing it. Then again, maybe there just isn't anybody to market this to. People seem content with their reality shows, so this might just be too advanced for the average watcher.

I share the same feelings of sadness and appreciation after reading your post. Thanks belong to you and to everyone else associated with bringing this show to TV, and I'll support Kings in every way possible. What's done is done, but man, did this show deserve better.

I really enjoyed the show, it was well written and interesting every week. I thought the storyline was creative and unique through well fleshed out characters and twisting plot lines.

I will miss the show but am happy to have been able to watch every show. My wife and I looked forward to each coming episode and were dismayed when it abruptly went on hiatus only to finish on a different night. I'm glad the first season was at least played out for fans to watch.

I would like to express my sincere thanks to Micheal Green and the entire cast and crew of Kings for providing me with hours of inspired television. I would like to equally express my sincere disapproval and disappointment with NBC for not giving the show a chance and killing it far before it had a chance to find an audience. Just because the marketing department was grossly incompetent because it was given intelligent material to market for once. Ironically, and perhaps more accurately idiotically, condemning the show to a time slot primarily viewed by the exact opposite target audience of this show (according to their own research and public Nielsen Ratings research!) the network did everything they could to ensure they threw their production money out the window and should forever be shamed at television industry confabs by their peers.

I believe this show would have been a better fit at a cable or pay tv network that seem to be able to market intelligent shows - perhaps because they have to. The big networks keep repeating the same mistakes and wondering why they are not getting different results - which is the very definition of insanity! They keep underestimating their audience, which is forcing their audience to look elsewhere for quality content - giving shows like the Sopranos, In Treatment, Mad Men, Rome wings on other networks. It is like the major networks want to drive every educated or inquiring mind away so they are only left with mindless drones chanting "More police and legal and hospital dramas and dysfunctional people misbehaving on camera please!" Ok, so maybe it's not a catchy chant - but I'm sure the writers of Kings could do a better job punching it up than the NBC marketing department.

In fact - I'd stake my kingdom on it.

Wrong Network, wrong audience! There where two show worth watching at the moment, one of them is MadMen and the other was Kings! Amazing television with historic content wrapped in an amazing new concept. Unfortunately there are just a few Networks with the right audience to understand the value of such a show, cable channels. This is sad but not surprising, keep putting out good work!

Good Luck!

Thank you Mr. Green for your very elegant farewell to a project you had every right to be more then proud of.
it is truly sad the hand that "Kings" was dealt.I was impressed at every turn on how plot was developed and seamlessly progressed. There is another thing that i must show true admiration of. The writers skillfully weaved biblical history with the current world state to produce a fresh epic tale. Why great shows that have substance, inspired acting, masterful writing, and visionary production can be thrown to the wind so carelessly is an atrocity of the worst kind. To rob the world of artisan creations of any kind is truly a nefarious act.
I was deeply saddened and bewildered when NBC did the same with another such show, "The Black Donnellys". In my opinion it was another fine gem that was tossed away for no more reason then having drawn the short straw. I thought that it had great promise and was a step above the rest. Sadly NBC feels it necessary to destroy true art whenever it gets the chance. Yet, somehow can cuddle and promote shows that are nothing more then pointless dribble that feeds America's socially deficient.
Its hard to put into words how an end of something great can make us feel. All we can do is acknowledge that we are deeply indebted to the people that worked so hard to bring us such a bright shining souvenir to enjoy, if even just for a short while. We can take solace in the fact that "Kings" did not live to see "creative changes" that alter its integrity and ruin a show, as has happened with many shows in the past. But, it went out strong and confident in itself. which is as much as any of us can hope for for ourselves.
I apologize for the long winded entry, but hope people will read it andagree and maybe somehow we can change the minds of such networks as NBC so they don't repeat this tremendous err. and again thank you Mr Green, the eulogy you wrote for this show is truly worthy of a King!

If we learned anything about the power of dvd sales and Itunes from Family Guy, if people will watch it and it seems there is no hope for it to come back, the networks want to make money and will do everything to make it happen if people prove they loved the show and would continue to support it.

I would put money on it that if sales continue, Kings will be back. I loved the mix of Biblical ideals, stories, names in a drama that isusually all about sex, and drugs. It was a breath of fresh air and deeper writing that as the actors spoke you felt as if just in the language itself posed a great future.

I am so sorry NBC is the network that picked you up. I am grateful that because of them we had the first season of your wonderful show, but saddened by the fact ABC didn't pick you up. With LOST, V, and FlashForward on the horizon, I believe Kings would have fit right in with this lineup.

It is a shame that it has all come to this. And I'm sorry to see that it's all over.

Thank you for all the time and effort put into Kings.

Ben Silverman announced today that he is quitting NBC (two days after Michael Green's letter to his fans). Does that change anything regarding the future of a comeback for Kings?

By James P. | July 28, 2009 3:02 PM | Reply

I am so disappointed to hear the KINGS has been cancelled. Although I didn't watch it from the beginning, once I saw one episode, I went back and watched all of them either on HULU or Prime Time on Demand. It is a shame that the show was not promoted more because I think it was never given a chance. Advertising for this show was lacking if not non-existent. Although I was pleased with the Saturday time slot, I know that is not a prime time for programming. NBC has so few good shows, they really misjudged the potential of this show.

I think this show was so well written, produced and executed. The story line was perfect and the acting was excellent. My husband and I were so excited to finally find a show we looked forward to seeing in this time of such poor programming. I wish there was something that could be done.

I am so disappointed.

Respectfully submitted.

Mr Green,

I am in awe over your show Kings, it was an amazing journey which I am privileged to have taken. I really hope that you do understand how great this show actually is, and even if the ratings weren't good enough which led to the cancellation it is purely because of bad marketing from NBC, you couldn't have done any different with the production of the show, it was pretty much perfect.

This show is unique and was handled so horribly bad by NBC, with a proper chance it would take on the World.

Best regards,
Romeo

I'm truly sad to see "Kings" go. It was easily my favorite new show of the season. Brilliant, perfectly acted, with an amazing script. I wil DEFINITELY get the DVD's when they come out later this year. Hopefully, NBC will consider the ideas that some of the other people here have said and give us a mniseries, movie of the week, direct-to-DVD, SOMETHING to help bring some closure to a show that shouldn't have had to have any this soon.

Wow. This is the first I've heard of the cancellation. Probably because I only watched the show on Hulu, but I absolutely loved it! I'm SO sad this show is leaving. I was so looking forward to seeing what happened with the baby, and how King Silas and David would either work things out or become worse enemies and if David would continue to get closer and closer to becoming the new King. UGH is all I can say, I suppose. I'm going to miss it. I already do.

I loved this show more than any other I've ever seen. I've never been so sad to see anything end like I am with Kings. Its a shame because NBC will figure out what they lost when the DVD is released. I tried to introduce as many people as I could to Kings and all who watched it loved it. It would be nice if the people that make the decisions at big corporations were actually in touch with their customers and not just their bank account. People watch what they are given and the networks choose to give them crap like the gentleman mentioned up at the top... cop dramas, hospital dramas and reality shows. Those types of shows are the reason I dont watch much TV. I can think of only two shows that survived after cancellation, Stargate SG-1 and Family Guy. I hope to God someone important reads this and puts Kings in that category. NBC doomed it from the get go and the funny part was the advertising was great! Thats what got me hooked, I wanted to see what it was all about. Somewhere they messed up cause I didnt know it had even started yet! I watched the first 3 episodes online to catch up. The only other problem was time slot damnation. it was doomed before it had a real chance... all because it had substance. Thank you to everyone involved in making this show, I loved every second of it and I hope you all keep quality coming.

I canceled cable about a month ago. To see this show canceled with all of the garbage remaining renews my faith that television is time; not well wasted. How can company spend so much and give up at episode 4. They then change to Saturday and then backtrack to Sunday. Yeesh.... that says everything. Obviousley, this network has very poor decision makers. Well back to real life and no more paying for garbage surrounded by commercials. Good riddance. side note... EZ Steets. Google it! Another great program, canceled because a network couldn't recognize what a prize they had.

In the end, I am truly sad for the many fans that were inspired by "Kings."

You should be very happy with the outcome of your work. the cancellation of it is absurd to me as I see so much reality garbage shoved in my face on prime time every night. I do hold NBC accountable in that they did not promote it and they moved its time before it even got off the ground running. I will miss this show very much!

Much like the impact that the 10 Commandments (the only real one with Charlton Heston) Kings was a daring and well played move. Just when you thought nothing of substance to watch existed a brave Director does a modern day retelling of one of the compelling biblical books. Like David against Goliath. Nearly every friend watched each episode, courtesy of Hulu, including my agnostic and atheist friends. They watched because it was well done and, whether you believe in a higherpower or not, the story overall is compelling. The material is as applicable to todays world as it was when it occured. Silly those that cancelled it. Placed in a poor slot and not marketed well, doomed it before it ran. It is as if folks do not realize over 80% in America believe in God (I did not say worshipped endlessly). That number gets larger outside the U.S. My advice, pick another book from the bible and retell it in modern day times. Mini-series versus committing to a full show if you lack the guts. Hollywood spends millions bring superman, spiderman, the XMEN and more to the screen but they are terrified of book 2000 years old with characters historically proven to be real and a built in market....Do you want to make money or not?

How can NBC make such a huge marketing mistake with the launch of this show? When I saw the pilot I knew I found a jewel among the "crap" NBC does.

I hope someone was fired and NBC realizes the dollars they could of had if they bothered to have a better plan. Heros (my former fav) has gotten stale and predictable this was NBC's chance to make something great. But oh well, the people in charge are out of touch with the public. The only reason I tune into this station was for Kings and Hero's. I am bored with Hero's so quiting NBC is a no-brainer.

I didn't even know about Kings until July 25 when I stumbled onto the final episode at the moment when Silas and the tanks broke up Jack's coronation. I was intrigued and looked up the series online, I saw it was cancelled, but checked out the first episode online and was hooked. I guess I'm not as broken up as some because I learned it was cancelled from the begining, but I will certainly miss Kings. Just a comment on Rome which was referenced above, Rome was not cancelled, it was always planned as a mini series. In fact, it was only supposed to be one season, but they added a second due to the popularity of the first, but it was never meant to be an ongoing series. I will miss Kings, and I don't think we will see anything like it again.

I've rewatched the last 3 episodes of Kings quite a few times on Hulu now. Those episodes are brutal and gutting and maddening all at once. It's amazing how it's possible to see a kingdom start to crumble and the people start to break. Although the cast was very engaging, Jack was my favorite and throughout the whole show my heart broke for him. I was very interested in everyones stories but his is the one I really want to see continue. Of course, I know what happens in the Bible, but I would love to see Kings version of these events. Is there any way the fans could know what was planned? Is a continuing book series a possibility? I hate that the story ends where it did, with everyone in such a horrible place. Thank you for making this show as beautiful and heart-wrenching as it is. Thank you for not pulling punches. And thank you for this goodbye letter. It was very touching.

When I first found Kings I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into, it only took the pilot to make me realize this series was going to be one of the best things I would ever watch and it didn't fail me. I have fell in love, hated, and felt so many things with these characters, characters so human and incredible. I really wish this story could go on, that we could see what you had planned for it. It's a real shame to see it go.

I hope NBC or somebody realizes this and gives us at least the time necessary to get a wrap up of events. Such an amazing material shouldn't go to waste.

I thank you, the cast and everybody involved in this project for giving us such a wonderful, full, intelligent and gorgeous show. Thanks for such an amazing journey. I wish you all the best in your next projects!

Truly, they shouldn't of cancelled the show. ESPECIALLY with a season finale like that. Everyday since the last episode i been wondering what happens next, and i can't stop thinking about it. At-least if it not coming back, can you please tell us what would have happened second season or can't another network pick it up? I really love with show, PLEASE COME BACK!!!!

Kings' cancellation is tragic. This was one of the most rewarding, fulfilling, and thoughtful shows I have seen on television in a very long time. I will be first in line to purchase the DVD and always curious as to how this story may have unfolded. Thank you for the great show, however shortlived it may have been.

Congratulations for such a great job.

Thanks to everyone who was involved in this great show.

It's been years since I've followed a weekly network show with the amount of interest as I did with Kings. I think it was compelling television. Wonderful writing, acting, direction and set design. I had a feeling it was going to get cancelled from the very beginning since I liked it so much. I like few things on TV. Kings made me smile, cry (hard at one point) and cheer. The show will be missed.

I am saddened to see one of the best shows in years to be cut, while dozens of other crappy ones get to stay. Truly someone, has no real clue what America wants to watch. I for one would gladly pay for not only season one on DVD, but also anymore straight to DVD seasons you want to print. certainly someone gets the hint that we like this kind of programming, and going to fix things.

Brilliant show. Nice that someone has the guts to do an innovative, take no prisioners show, even though it's not likely to survive the other crap being renewed. Thanks for the show and I for one will be buying the dvd.

It is a tragedy, such a great show. I am glad I got to see the final episode before I deployed, but am left feeling a bit empty about the whole thing.

I for one have seen enough of the world to enjoy a moment when I can watch TV and see the good guy get the girl, defeat the villian, and bring peace to their people... or at least make a real effort at it.

I know the story this whole thing is based on and I know it well. Still, missing the chance to see Mr. Green's version play out is something that will bother me for some time. It was the only show on NBC I actually watched. I guess it is back to FOX and CBS.

Still, for a time it was nice to see something so motivating and positive in its overall effect. For that, thank you NBC.

Mr Green, if there is any way to get anyone to produce a second season... to at least close the chapter, please let them do it.

As a final note, I realize that as a general rule networks aren't entirely stupid, they choose their shows based on the revenue earned. To this end Kings didn't meet their requirements. It is sad, truly sad, but so be it. It was a great run though, and at least I had a character I could really get behind for a bit. Now, back to the real world where good guys don't always prevail. Maybe when I get back in a year someone will have changed their mind or bought the show.

Until then...

This is the only thing we have watched religiously, since 24. I can't believe they once again, ditched the most promising, original script and action we've seen in a long time. This show made you THINK!! IS there no network that will pick it up??

IF this show were started in the fall, it would have made it. Not midseason, mid network transitions, etc. ONCE AGAIN so disappointed in NBC.

By Joan Brown | July 31, 2009 10:02 AM | Reply

This is just another show that was way too smart and original for television.

By iamsofaking | July 31, 2009 10:26 AM | Reply

Thank you for a great show. It reminded me of the old days a few years ago when series and miniseries had substance, characters, and a morality about them.

This was unfortunately before cost-effectiveness and profit maximization, those terminal diseases of worthwhile human endeavors in a money-driven culture, replaced them with cheap, easy to produce programming.

As David was seen in the last scene escaping through a wooded path in Gath i hoped i would see "To Be Continued", but unfortunately it was not to be. I wish the series could go on, maybe on the Sci-Fi channel.

BTW: as a testament to NBC's lack of consideration for viewers, our local channel chose to interrupt the sound of about two
minutes of the first 15 minutes with a "Flash Flood Warning". Just the visual notice would have been adequate

I have to ask, how often do you hear a creator of a show give up? Yes, the is a great show and should be picked up!! However, why isn't the creator doing everything in his power to get another network to pick up his show? Why?? WHY??

By Brandon | July 31, 2009 8:53 PM | Reply

This is very sad. So, from the very beginning it never had a chance. All the writing,e-mails, etc., didn't matter. It was canceled from the very first episode. I really beleive, Mr. Green, this show could have been saved by door knocking on other venues. Why give up so soon? Kings was and still is a fantastic show. Directv might have given it a look. I think everyone gave up on it too soon. If you believe in a project, why quit? Such a shame. I would have fought to put it on another station. It could have been done. However, apparently, after reading Mr. Green's post, I guess everyone involved in this project didn't believe in it enough.

Without a doubt, one of the best series I have ever watched. So much so that I am doing a first for me and commenting on a bulletin board.

Very sad to see it go as it still had much life (and story) to tell. If it is ever revived I will be there to see it.

Too bad HBO or Showtime won't pick it up. I would without a doubt subscribe to their services again, yes, just for this series.

Great job on the show, you should be proud of it.

I am a huge fan of Kings.

Even with the poor advertisement I became interested in this show.

It was powerful, it made me think, love, feel and hurt.

As with Firefly, Jericho and now Kings - TV that is different doesn’t survive. For some reason the majority of the population would rather watch a bunch of big ladies find love.

I have decided two things as of now.

1) I will no longer watch any new shows on any networks. Too many of my favorite shows get canceled.
And
2) I will buy the season DVD. I will also buy the season DVD as a gift for all of my family members. If DVD sales are high enough we may get a mini-series or tv-movie that tells us the rest of the story.

Thanks for this posting ---- It is nice to have some insight. Great job on the show, I will miss it.

Everyone, buy the Series DVDs!!!!!!

i just don't understand, why will the networks insist on re-inventing the wheel (and fail most of the time) instead of picking this show back up and dusting it, and putting back on track...and watch it beat everyone else in this race.

thank you for excellence in television.

my fave episode was CHAPTER ONE. great cinematography, and haunting story and introspective.

thank you.

From a spanish fan who got really hooked on the show, a different perspective from what we get these days on TV, I would say one of the few shows who were really worth it and It got cancelled, which made me and the rest of the fans really sad.

Michael, i suppose you had already planned the story arc for the second season, specially after seeing how the last episode ends, are you thinking on posting about it or will we have a chance to read about it??

Thanks for making the show

Again thanks for a great show. To all the comments thanks also for inspiration that there are still intelligent viewers out there.

The only show before Kings that I followed was Jericho, both seasons. (Although my wife and I followed ER the last of the tradition of good shows like St. Elsewhere, Hill St. Blues. Kingdom Hospital, etc.in the "good old days") It was another post-apocalyptic plot.

Jericho, after a more or less organized via internet effort, was continued for another season. Inspired by the comment “nuts” by one of the lead characters all the unhappy viewers flooded the network offices with nuts of all descriptions. I don’t recommend flooding NBC with butterflies though unless they are replicas. It came to a satisfying conclusion.

The sequel could have been "American Civil War II" between East and West. I wrote an imaginary scenario of the cataclysmic events that followed which could have culminated in a future Kingdom of Gilboa. (It’s buried somewhere in comments and forum around April 1 of this yearJ) BTW: The convoluted nature of the different forums did not help the show. I would have liked something more KISS.

As far as much TV being crap, I agree. Reality (unreality really) shows are the worst. I call some of them “young thugs in training”; God! and they may be running this country someday.

I am surprised that nobody seems to have commented that the dramatic offerings on PBS both domestic and TV do provide quality drama and documentaries. They aren’t all BBC reruns; many are new series. Perhaps KINGS could go on there.

If you want political intrigue and discussion try CSPAN. The politicos in DC sometimes put on a good show (no uniformed guy with Glock at the ready in case of dissent though). I don’t have all the cable channels so I don’t know what is on Sci Fi, History, A&E, etc.

If for no other reason than missing out on the sound during preparation for the coronation of “King Jack”, I will look for the DVD when it is released.

Again thanks.

Final note: When you comment to this page, I suggest you do it on a word processor first, then cut and past. Typing directly in here is incredibly slow (and I have a high speed connection). Also copy your comment. Sometimes your submit will be lost.

It is sad to see a great show like "Kings" end.

But I would wonder, just how much the content and especially the central character of "Cross" had to do with the cancellation: General Electric, who owns NBC, is one of the largest military contractors on the face of the Earth.

The character "Cross", brother of the Queen and CEO of "CrossGen Corporation" epitomized the evil greed of warmongering for profit... In the show, he actually tried to murder the King and put his own puppet in so the warring could continue without end.

Perhaps G.E. did not not like that very telling reminder to the viewers, of just how much this corporation profits from the deaths of our young soldiers.

What a horrible shame to have a great show taken while garbage abounds on every channel. Kings may have started slowly, but it grew so worthy of the time and effort to watch it, that I, like so many other fans, feel pain at this entertaining show being lost to the few that appreciate thought in their TV viewing. I also wish another network, or channel, would pick-up where Kings left off, or attempt to create a rightful heir to the throne.

Mr. Green,

Are you going to quit? Just like that? There is brillant creativity that is the essence of your work! This show was truly one of the greatest I've seen in awhile.

You can't quit. I know you are restrained from throwing NBC under the bus, but lets face it. The network was more of a hinderance than a help.

If you believe in Kings, then you will move on. I believe in Kings! The show cannot end like this. David becomes King David and God-chosen! David has so many real world struggles that identify with current times. He has an affair with Bathsheba and sends her husband to die. There are twists to the plot and a story to tell that is as exciting as Season 1.

I urge you! Please continue Kings! Find a network that is willing to carry it. Promote it as a real-world story of King David. You must not quit and give up hope!

Please!

This was by far the best and original shows I have seen. The only other show that has caught my attention and made me to where I HAVE to watch it is Sopranos on HBO. It had great substance and know the popularity was catching on, but it sounds as if the marketing was not great which led to a bad launch!! I would follow this show to any network! I hope that Michael Green keeps pushing to find someone to pick it up and a network that is better at promoting and not scared to give someone a second chance. I am sad it is no longer on and hope to see it resurface. There have been other shows that have been resurrected and came back to life, so let it be this one!!

Please consider writing a book to finish your thoughts for the plot. We had the DVR set to record every week and we loved it so much.

NBC has canceled too many of my favorite shows like surface and now kings! We finally had a show that wasn't a hospital or a crime scene, although "CSI: Shiloh" may have been pretty awesome with all those people 'disappearing'.

Please fight for some kind of continuation.

I really enjoyed the show and am very upset that NBC has once again disappointed me with their choices. I thought it was great and the creativity with an undertone of religious belief was evident. It was an amazing way to tell the story of David in a modern time. I believe there is still hope to revive the show just look at what other shows have done to once again to become revived after cancellation. Please don't give up. This story should go on no matter what ratings say. At least give the people something they enjoy, especially in a time like this.

Glad to see NBC has kept up its proud tradition of not knowing what the hell it's doing. Way to handicap a great show with a horrible time slot then cancel it. I'm constantly shocked how you stay on the air operating at such a high level of exceptional incompetence.

I am shocked to learn the show was canceled. I rarely caught it on TV - Saturday night is the worst time for even the most amazing and intelligent series as Kings - but I always watched it online. I will truly genuinely miss it. I am a university professor and just a couple of weeks ago my film students brought up the Kings as a rare example of high-quality TV. Some of them predicted the show would not last because of the networks' love for mindless reality TV and sitcoms. It is so very sad their predictions came true.

If there's anything the fans can do to reinstate the show or pitch it to another network, I would be happy to make my contribution.

Beautiful, though provoking show with great acting and writing! Sadly shows of this caliber always get cut in their infancy without so much as allowing them to blossom into their full potential. I do not obsess over TV very often, but this show was tops in my book. NBC has disappointed me again - not surprisingly. It won't matter if I say that I'll never watch NBC again, because they obviously never listened to their viewers to begin with. Its a truly sad world we live in.

Shades of "I'll Fly Away," another excellently produced program that NBC shot down on the basis of ratings some years ago, leaving me similarly irritated and disappointed. KINGS was one of the finest TV programs that has been done for quite a while--based upon a classic ancient narrative, respectfully handling religious themes without alienating anyone, great stories, super actors, just a great viewing experience all around. And now this. NBC could have made an effort to further publicize and push this program. NBC could have made this work. But instead they committed the television version of regicide. The cancellation of KINGS leaves me thinking that NBC's decision makers may just be a bunch of soul-less mercenaries. Even the Philistines would have had the sense to give this show another season. Long live the KINGS!

Kings was/is an awesome show. I'm a Christ-follower and encouraged my friends to watch the show as well. As with the movies "The Matrix" and "I, Robot" the biblical bases are refreshing. I tuned in weekly and was captivated by the characters and the plots. Wonderful, wonderful work by all involved. Thank you Mr. Green for following your dream and allowing me to experience it.

To NBC, thanks for Hulu and thanks for giving this show a chance to shine. My wife & I got rid of our TV (and cable access) last year so Hulu allowed us to see this wonderful work of art. But now that its gone, and there are no other regular shows worth watching, we won't be as frequent viewers of this website. We still watch a movie on Hulu once a month or so, but Kings is the reason I downloaded Hulu Desktop. Its discontinuation will now be the reason I delete it.

Maybe the time slots weren't that great but I still watched and I even set my dvd to record it. They need a better way of monitoring the ratings. I don't know how they choose the raters but there's got to be a better way like email responds or interactive tv were we can press a button to rate a show. Other cable markets are doing it as a part of advertising. Maybe that can be something to think about. Please email me when the dvds come out. Also, are the DVD's going to be a complete series?

We are very disappointed in the cancellation of the best show ever made, Kings! We were so impressed with the time and effort in the making this series that we tried our best to catch up by watching it on Hulu just so by the time saturday came, we would continue on from there.

We also feel that NBC should have had promoted the show a lot better just by the mere fact that many people were not aware of the show or even the cancellation to that matter.

To be honest, my family and I do not normally take the time to watch hours and hours of television in one sitting. I was surprised myself once I have realized that on the first night of watching the series on Hulu it was 5:00AM. What was comical was once an episode ended, my father would holler out "NEXT!"

I understand that it is upsetting that by the result of it being moved to Saturdays caused lower ratings as well as NBC having fear of how "religious" viewers may disapprove of the biblical content behind the show. However, it was nice to see a change in what can be viewed on television that can give hope, courage, and inspiration in one's life.

Please do not back down on completing your development on a great show! Never give up in bringing KINGS back to television for it was not only inspiring to my family but many others as well. If NBC knew what was good for them they would have kept the production of Kings for many more sessions to come.

Please if do us all a favor and bring Kings back! Please!

The characters in the story outstanding. The acting was so impressive I felt the actors were should get so much recognition for. Everyone. The casting so well done. I am disappointed and will send a letter with a butterfly for sure. I Love the reverend. And the subject of large corporations pulling the strings behind the powers that be is so timely. It was done in NY City The Empire State my hometown you took some of the best locations and built a kingdom out of it. Masterful. So refreshing to see this instead of brainless television. Medical Dramas, Police Shows, Reality shows. Bleh sick of that. Kings Was worth my time. I respect you for constructing a show with so much soul, so much meat, So much intrigue. Job well done. Great work Mr. Green, and the cast was absolutely fantastic. Don't think about changing the way you write, because you write brilliantly. This show was canceled due to NBCs lack of advertisement.

P.S. Congratulations on your effort though, if I found out that my show was canceled for "The Good Wife", I wouldn't be calling it a promising series.

Kings is a wonderful adventure and retelling of an important story. My family does not watch network television and found the series on iTunes. I guess I am not surprised that NBC did not continue the show - there is so little worthwhile content on television that Kings would have created too much contrast - the fragile vessel of mass entertainment could not have withstood the continued stress.

Thanks for iTunes - perhaps this pay for play model will eventually lead to series like Kings being more the norm. I look forward to that day. iTunes is the new theater!

Mr. Green, you, your fellow writers, producers, actors , and film making team are to be congratulated. Thank you for retelling this tale so thoughtfully. I will miss the continued vicarious journey.

I didn't have the heart to watch the last six episodes till, coincidentally, last night. Was up till six a.m.; good thing I work at home.

I'm not sure I should thank you for making it difficult to watch other programs. McShane and Cox set a high bar, don't they? And honest-to-whatever character-driven storytelling is as rare as unicorns, sigh.

I mourn the loss of seeing Jack's redemption arc, and what you had in store for Cuklin.

It is a shame Kings was-- for whatever reason-- unable to find an audience sufficient to merit continuation. It is also a shame the network was unwilling to take a moment to discover what they could do to help it find its audience.

I thought the show was excellent. I know a number of people, personally, who agreed. It is a piece of cake to find television programs of abominable quality with long histories.

It seems to me we have arrived at a point in major media where quality programming is dependably viable only on cable, or perhaps on a per-view basis.

We all look forward to patronizing what you and others involved in this excellent series offer in the future.

Mr,Green

You have done something remarkable. You brought true story telling back to the people. So long as we been flipping through the channels just to find more trash, high school level drama...

You retold a great tale that was truely epic, and retold it well.

It is a shame that this network didn't see this work for what it truely was and is. I hope that someone out there is not as foolish and blind and will offer you a chance to continue this story.

Thank you for bringing back what TV was made for.

For all you reading this, Mr Green maybe cannot say it, but we should all try and show the support for Kings. Voice your opinions. Let them know we want this show back!

Mr. Green,

Thank you for all your hard work. One of the best shows i have seen on TV in over a decade. I've worked on pilots that did not make it and know how crushing it is. I do hope that another network picks this up quickly. If NBC would have given it a good shot with promotion you might have had a shot... unfortunately it is what it is at this point.

please continue the amazing work. don't give up. keep on keepin on.

cheers.

Well, I would have to say that I really really enjoyed this show. I am a Bible believing Christian who has always loved the story of King David, a man after God's own heart. I'm sorry to hear that it has been canceled! Saturday night was a terrible timeslot, but now with hulu,I could watch KINGS whenever I had time, it was the show that I most looked forward to during the week. Maybe after all the comments, they'll bring it back =). What I really wanted to say is this, thank you so much for taking a common story from the Bible and making it real. Yeah, there were times when I wished I had been on the pannel in order to change things here and there so that they would be more Biblical, but overall, I thought that you all did a great job. Congratulations! What I pray most is that through watching this show about the life of Israel's second greatest king, people come to meet Israel's first greatest King. If you liked Kings then maybe you should check out the real story in 1 Samuel

I was fortunate enough to catch the first episode on TV (premier) and was captivated immediately! I am not a religious person, I enjoyed it because it was telling a FABULOUS story with well developed characters and such an interesting plot. I kept watching for the episodes and then they disappeared (apparently to Saturday night) and had to catch the rest on hulu (thank you hulu!!) I am fiercely disappointed in it's cancellation. I will do my best to join in the masses to get a storyline closure (a la Firefly, Jericho and Farscape) It is too bad that an excellent show hinged so much on it's first step out the door. Sometimes it takes a little revving to get a good thing going! I will long for the ending that *may* not come, what is to become of the good Shephard and his princess bride?

Michael Green,

You have a wonderful show. I for one will not let it go without a fight. Our strength is in our unity of purpose.

We can save Kings. Let the peoples voices echo from one network to another. Someone will listen. And our Kingdom will be reborn.

Thank you! - Michael

I discovered Kings when my Religion teacher in school showed it in class as part of a lesson. When I saw it, my curiosity aroused. I went home and looked it up, watching the first few episodes. Instantly, I found this show was truly addicting. As someone who knows the original stories from the bible, I love seeing the modern take of it. I would often go online to watch the shows, quickly becoming my favorite series. I'm crushed to find out the show is ending, especially when so many questions come to mind on where could the show go still. I desperately hope there is some chance of the show being saved. Thank you Michael Green for doing such a terrific job with this program. I'm sad that people do not appreciate the quality of work that has been put into this amazing show.

I am so sad and disappointed that Kings has been cancelled. In this new age of reality television, there aren’t many shows with substance anymore. Kings was extra special because there were moral lessons and they were delivered in such a way that no one was offended or put off and it was just a terrific, terrific show. It is a sad day when this type of programming is cancelled but ones like Parks and Recreation and The Biggest Loser are still on the air. I looked forward to Saturday night all week long just for this one hour of programming and I can’t believe it’s not going to be one anymore.

My husband and I are so disgusted with television these days and this is just one more example of why.

Thank you Michael Green for a few short months of television worth watching.

Heartbroken...that's it. Heartbroken for all the fans, actors, writers, stage crew, and on and on. It is truly a shame on NBC to be so shortsighted. A thought here...TNT?? They have really taken the as leaders in creative TV drama. Any hope there?

Like so many others I would buy a book to find out what happens next. Please consider it.

Until we meet again,

I am an asian american and full blown Buddhist and in no way christian. But you guys make Kings so interesting and exciting i sometimes forget this is all biblical. I just see the show as pure talent and creativity. So just keep your head up and be proud of wat u have created, defanatly buying the dvd to cherish a 21st century masterpiece that ended before it began.

NO! I just found out that the show has been canceled. I am sick! I am one that only gets to watch it on the internet due to my busy life. I love this show. Can you keep making it and show it on the internet? Is there a company out there somewhere that would help? I mean -- maybe Bill Gates could start a internet "tv" station!!! I will be waiting for the DVD - I loved the fact that GOD was talked about -

The actors were also GREAT! They made you feel all kinds of emotions during one showing - and leave you craving for more one the show was done.

How sad my life will be and the craving will remain unfullfilled. I'll keep checking back and saying a prayer for a change of heart or someone eles stepping in and pick up the tab for an untapped GOLD MINE - KINGS --

This was one of the best shows I have seen in a long time. Having recently moved from the UK to Canada I was despairing at the bad TV until I found the trailer for Kings. Without a doubt the actors and the writers made this show great. I cannot believe that this is not being picked up by another network. Such a shame. I guess it's back to hunting for something noteworthy to watch for me. Thank you to all involved, I enjoyed every minute of this show.

I loved this show, it was a source of light in these dark ages of television. The disappointment I feel about NBC canceling it is huge, much alike what I felt when HBO cancelled Carnivale.

Quantity over quality.. what a shame

Another sad fan! Ditto to what everyone else said. This was an incredibly well written and different show. I will really miss it. If USA, SyFy, or FX are listening... PLEASE try to pickup KINGS!
I am another follower via DVR and never missed an episode. Between Hulu, iTunes, and DVR's NBC's marketing and analysis engine needs to reach the 20th century. There are too many silly shows out there that should NOT be on.

Continue Kings.
Thanks again for sharing Kings with us. It will be missed.

I was sadden to hear that the only show the NBC has ever aired, that drew me in and that I understood well had been cancelled. There were some episodes that I really didn't understand, but over all the entire show interested me so much. Maybe NBC could always sell the show to some other network that doesn't have very high rated shows, so they could continue it on.

Shame on NBC for not believing that some shows take more than a single season to garner an audience.

Many times there are brilliant ideas that live on beyond a marketer's dreams. Star Trek for one. Firefly for another. M*A*S*H did lousy in their beginnings. The "I want it all NOW" mindset of the three major networks are going to keep them away from series like The Sopranos, Oz, Dexter, Weeds and other similar shows because they might p-ss off two or three viewers.

Unless they are trying to do it, I am surprised that they are going for an audience comprised of Jerry Springer type viewers. They owe it to the country for the use of airtime to at least TRY to bring up the mean IQ of the country.

Absolutely the best program I've watched in years! As a matter of fact, I can't remember the last time I rushed home to watch a program (no tivo). I guess an excellent weekly series is too much to ask for from NBC.

Mr. Green, you are a visionary--keep up the good work!

Kings is one of the greatest shoes I have watched for awhile and I am disappointed that NBC has discontinued it. I don't know how they get these viewer count numbers. It seems most of us watch the shows on Hulu nowadays because the NBC site is incompetent at displaying episodes correctly.

Mr. Green I want to applaud you at doing a great job. I found the story vivid and the filming a pleasure.

I think I am done with NBC as well. They have released many shows with no substance. Now they have a show that is actually good - they pulled it off the air. NBC did support they show and got it started but it seem that they already set their mind on cancelling it since the beginning. I was skimming through the marketing materials and it seems that NBC didn't care since the pilot.

Mr. Green, I am starting my comapny now. When I make it big I will fund your shows.

I don't watch and love very many television shows these days, but Kings definitely has won a special place in my heart.

I went on Hulu for the past 2 Sundays not knowing that the show was canceled and that Part 2 was the finale, only to be disappointed when I didn't see anything.

It saddens me that you were canceled. Promotion for the show on the NBC was meager at best. I stumbled across it on Hulu, and after watching the first 5 episodes back to back I was hooked.

The story line, the imagery, the plots, the beautifully written dialogue...it's been far too long since we've seen something of this magnitude on network TV.

Honestly, Kings was "HBO" worthy...maybe it's an outlet to be considered.

Nevertheless, if we never see another episode, know that what you developed and created with the 12 you were given, was a gift and a pleasure to watch.

The show will be sorely missed.

I loved watching it !!! I didn't see any religious agenda and I truly thought it was great. The general story is connected to the bible but the details are way off. I'm sorry it is gone, I would of loved to see how it ends.

In any case, it was a very nice gurney. Thank you for letting me take part in your story.

I am very sorry to find that Kings has been cancelled. My husband and I looked forward to each episode. There are just too few really worthwhile productions on TV these days. NBC has made another big mistake in cancelling this series! No wonder they keep losing ground to the other networks. They are out of touch with the audience and will never regain the status they once enjoyed until they take time to listen to the people.

I love Kings so much! I was hooked from the first episode. I made all my friends watch it. I must have watched the first episode on Hulu about 4 times. You did an AMAZING job..

When you begin to like a series like Kings, the characters become real, and your intrigued by the drama and the situations the characters are in. Only a good writer can get viewers to feel that way. I really hope it can come back on. If not, I can't wait for the next series you come out with :)

NBC has made A HUGE MISTAKE in cancelling such a great show, and I'm ticked to not see the end of the story. Time and Time again they dump good shows for trash that won't last a season either. I hope that some other network picks it up.

I just finshed the final episode and was sad to read this letter. It seems that good shows don't last. This is not the first time that NBC has gotten my hope up, reeled me in the then cut the line. This is the best show i've have seen in some time and i am glad for the time to spend with David and Silas and all of the others. I will miss it very much. I hope that NBC read this although im sure that there to busy counting their money and not caring what viewers think. To corprate it's all about the money, quantity not quality. Kings was Quality, 95% of the shows out today garbage, just a way for people to make waste theis lives. We god job to the team of Kings, truly the best show on NBC. the only good this that NBC has is The Office and Notre Dame football.

I don't watch TV anymore because it is just drivel. Reality TV numbs the brain of anyone watching it, and rewards people for being horrible to one another. And if I see one more version of Law and Order or CSI, I will crack.

Then my friend introduced me to Kings, through iTunes. I loved it. An excellent story, well crafted into an inspiring, uplifting and intriguing drama.

And now I find out it's been canceled. I feel disappointed. Time and again the TV shows that appeal to people with brains in their heads are canceled to make way for more stupidity.

To reiterate what others have said, if resurrection is impossible, could we have a movie, like Firefly did with Serendipity?

I'm sad to know that I will be giving any money to a network that would cancel such a great program based on a single night of ratings, but I will be buying the series on DVD.

NBC should learn to give good programming a little time to catch on. I told everyone I knew about the show and how great it was. Nearly every one of them watched it, and were surprised not to have heard about it. Every one of them were very upset to learn of the move to Saturday night and of the cancellation. I know of many that will be buying the DVD.

Thanks so much for sharing your vision with us, keep trying new and bold things, they will catch on eventually.

Thank you, Mr Green, for Kings. I loved this show and can't get it out of my mind. The last episode of the season was one of the most delicious hours of TV I've ever watched. I am one of those "religious"--though I don't like that term--viewers, and happened to be reading through Samuel, Kings and Chronicles when I started watching Kings, which only increased my interest. Thank goodness for Hulu; NBC did a great job of hiding your show. So thank you, thank you....keep writing...and in the meantime, I will keep hoping Kings will resurface somewhere!

The cancellation of a show so great is absolutely criminal. Especially so when shows like Merlin continue to air on the same network. The target audience for Kings was never reached, and thus Kings went on unnoticed. The photography, writing, setting, and overall premise was marvelously ambitious. I will truly miss this series. During its run it was indeed the best show on television.
